“If someone asks me what Cloud Computing is, I try not to get bogged down with definitions. I tell them that, simply put, Cloud Computing is a better way to run your business.” Marc Benioff, Founder, CEO and Chairman of Salesforce. Nowadays Cloud Computing has become an important tool that enables digital transformation thanks to a wide offer of services, from Office Automation to Internet of Things, from Customer Relationship Management to Artificial Intelligence. The management and the adoption of Public Cloud solutions has become one of the biggest challenges for many firms. Furthermore, norms like GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) have been recently introduced and as a consequence, data privacy & IT security have become relevant issues for enterprises. This study aims at contributing to the research in this domain, providing a reference model which could help large private companies operating in Italy to manage their Cloud Transformation process, and providing managerial guidelines related to the different process stages. This research has been conducted triangulating data coming from ten semi-structured interviews and archival data coming from newspapers, reports, websites, and scientific papers. The empirical evidence combined with the literature review has led to the development of ten case studies, built on ten large private companies operating in Italy, and to the development of a model presented within Chapter 4. For what concerns the theoretical contributions, an important result consists in the identification of the main benefits that firms seek when adopting on-premise and/or Public Cloud solutions. Then, it has been investigated how companies’ characteristics vary according to stage of Cloud Transformation and to the category they belong in our model (Analyzers, Prospectors and Defenders). Subsequently, it has been outlined the typical path that a large private company (with a medium/high business complexity) follows during its process of Cloud Transformation. Finally, the theoretical evidences and the managerial guidelines derived from the analysis have been summarised in Chapter 5.
