TikTok, known as Douyin in China, has quickly become the world’s leading social media app across several categories—in much less time than other leading apps. Within just less than one year of Douyin’s international version (Tik Tok) launching, the app became the world’s most downloaded iOS app during the full first half of 2018, it was downloaded more than 104 million times on Apple’s App Store. And to date (Jun 2019), TikTok has been installed by more than 1.2 billion App Store and Google Play users globally (not included Chinese Android users) and has grossed $100 million from in-app purchases, with an exponential growth rate. It is the most interesting question for concerned people that how and why TikTok has such insane growth and what implicit message could be found based on data from Douyin. The goal of this project is to take an in-depth look at TikTok's story from its launching to date. The project is divided into 5 parts. The first part is the introduction which states what the definition of TikTok is, who loves to use it, where regions it is popular, and the project meanings and procedures. The second part is "Overview: Above the surface, TikTok’s growth story. This section contains vital milestones and events throughout the entire periods from its first launching to date based on public info from news media and Tik Tok (Douyin) official. The third part 'Dive into Data', the explorable data visualization of a close look into TikTok’s content, creators attributes and its recommendation system driven by Artificial Intelligence. The fourth section is the conclusion presenting the findings of the thesis. The last part is the reference which includes information resource and data resource. Through the presented data storytelling it is possible to understand how it works this popular platform.
TikTok, noto come Douyin in Cina, è rapidamente diventato la principale app di social media al mondo in diverse categorie, in molto meno tempo rispetto ad altre app leader. Entro poco meno di un anno dal lancio della versione internazionale di Douyin (Tik Tok), l'app è diventata l'app iOS più scaricata al mondo durante la prima metà del 2018, è stata scaricata oltre 104 milioni di volte sull'App Store di Apple. E ad oggi (giugno 2019), TikTok è stato installato da oltre 1,2 miliardi di utenti di App Store e Google Play in tutto il mondo (non inclusi gli utenti Android cinesi) e ha incassato $ 100 milioni dagli acquisti in-app, crescendo con un tasso di crescita quasi esponenziale. Lo scopo di questo progetto è approfondire la storia di TikTok dal suo lancio fino ad oggi. Il progetto è diviso in 5 parti. La prima parte è una introduzione sulla piattaforma, chi ama usarla, in quali regioni è più popolare e le logiche che governano la piattaforma. La seconda parte è "Panoramica: sopra la superficie, la storia della crescita di TikTok. Questa sezione contiene pietre miliari ed eventi fondamentali durante tutto il periodo dal suo primo lancio fino ad oggi sulla base di informazioni pubbliche dei media e del funzionario di Tik Tok (Douyin). La terza parte "Immergiti nei dati", la visualizzazione di dati esplorabili di uno sguardo ravvicinato al contenuto di TikTok, agli attributi dei creatori e al suo sistema di raccomandazioni guidato dall'intelligenza artificiale. La quarta sezione è la conclusione in cui si presentano i risultati. L'ultima parte è il riferimento che include risorse di informazioni e risorse di dati. Attraverso il percorso guidato dai dati, è possibile capire il funzionamento di questa piattaforma così popolare.
