Waterfront silos. Museum of Barreiro

ABSTRACT This project represents an idea of valorization and an uprise of devastated and mostly abandoned industrial area of the city of Barreiro. The initial step was to recognize and identify the strategic position that would represent a completely new landmark for the citizens and visitors of the city, but, in the same time to develop a strategic vision for Barreiro. Of fundamental importance for the definition of the master plan was the study of the morphology of the area and in particular of its industrial vocation. Here, in fact, we find large buildings of a productive nature scattered throughout the territory and in particular on the river front. The ex-industrial vacant area is chosen in order to be redefined and to emphasize its potential of accessibility with the riverfront as walking axis for public uses. The project involves a consolidation of this truck thus a reconnecting the area to the rest of the city and rebuilding the strong edge of the long river through the making of a "miradouro" (terrace, viewpoint). The existing grain silos building was chosen to represent the reflection of the idea, not only to ‘’build’’ but, to face with what history has already built but present was not able to deal with. It was decided to preserve the character and industrial memory of this building by enhancing its importance and existing in use of Industrial Museum of the city. The geometric shapes of concrete silos and their visual elegance and rigidity at the same time, are used as strong point for our case in terms of creation of inner spaces. It became like archaeology, like excavating out gallery spaces, but not wanting to obliterate the tubularity completely. The obligation was set not to create but to recognize and to empower the monumentality of the building that rises in height, thus marking its presence within larger distances and configuring a new urban landmark. We aimed at imprinting to the building a somewhat ambiguous character, on one hand it “dissipates” and accepts the prevalence of the natural elements, on the other hand it deals with their presence as an artificial element of abstract origin. The building includes museum and gallery spaces with the movie show room auditorium with the capacity of a hundred and thirty visitors, and a restaurant on the top of the building, as a clear representation of the addition to the existing built. The excavation underground was a reflection of what it was ‘’left’’ and stagnated, so that we connected the museum to this level so it represents a long journey with an sensitive insertion of natural lighting from above by using skylight cones that are a part of urban area. The entrance and exit of the building are at the two opposite sides of the masterplan as a way of re - communication of the pathways of two sides of the city. It was an objective to create a green zones and provide a higher life quality from the pedestrians point of view. The objective was clearly established to create the conditions to form a new qualified urban area with careful multi-purpose cohabitation, where new high-income and activities could be set up,new logistics and trade activities that benefit from the increased accessibility that new transport infrastructures will introduce on site, but also activities to work in the park that are interested in staying. All this is also favoring areas intended for residential use that are in proximity to our site.

Questo progetto rappresenta un'idea di valorizzazione e una ripresa della zona industriale devastata e per lo più abbandonata della città di Barreiro. Il primo passo è stato riconoscere e identificare la posizione strategica che rappresenterebbe un punto di riferimento completamente nuovo per i cittadini e i visitatori della città, ma, allo stesso tempo, sviluppare una visione strategica per Barreiro. Di fondamentale importanza per la definizione del piano generale è stato lo studio della morfologia dell'area e in particolare della sua vocazione industriale. Qui, infatti, troviamo grandi edifici di natura produttiva sparsi su tutto il territorio e in particolare sul fronte del fiume. L'area vacante ex industriale è stata scelta per essere ridefinita e per enfatizzare il suo potenziale di accessibilità con il lungofiume come asse pedonale per usi pubblici. Il progetto prevede un consolidamento di questo camion in modo da ricollegare l'area al resto della città e ricostruire il bordo forte del lungo fiume attraverso la realizzazione di un "miradouro" (terrazza, punto di vista). La costruzione di silos di grano esistente è stata scelta per rappresentare il riflesso dell'idea, non solo per "costruire", ma per affrontare ciò che la storia ha già costruito ma il presente non è stato in grado di affrontare. Fu deciso di preservare il carattere e la memoria industriale di questo edificio aumentandone l'importanza e l'utilizzo in uso del Museo Industriale della città. Le forme geometriche dei silos di cemento e la loro eleganza visiva e rigidità allo stesso tempo, sono utilizzate come punto di forza per il nostro caso in termini di creazione di spazi interni. È diventato come l'archeologia, come scavare gli spazi della galleria, ma non voler cancellare completamente la tubolarità. L'obbligo non era di creare, ma di riconoscere e potenziare la monumentalità dell'edificio che si innalza in altezza, segnando così la sua presenza a distanze maggiori e configurando un nuovo punto di riferimento urbano. Abbiamo mirato a imprimere all'edificio un carattere un po 'ambiguo, da un lato "dissipa" e accetta la prevalenza degli elementi naturali, dall'altro tratta la loro presenza come un elemento artificiale di origine astratta. L'edificio comprende spazi per musei e gallerie con l'auditorium della sala dello spettacolo cinematografico con una capacità di centotrenta visitatori e un ristorante nella parte superiore dell'edificio, come una chiara rappresentazione dell'aggiunta alla costruzione esistente. Lo scavo sotterraneo è stato un riflesso di ciò che era "lasciato" e ristagnato, in modo che abbiamo collegato il museo a questo livello in modo che rappresenti un lungo viaggio con un inserimento sensibile dell'illuminazione naturale dall'alto utilizzando coni lucernari che fanno parte di area urbana. L'ingresso e l'uscita dell'edificio sono ai due lati opposti del piano generale come mezzo di ri-comunicazione dei percorsi dei due lati della città. L'obiettivo era creare zone verdi e offrire una qualità di vita superiore dal punto di vista dei pedoni. L'obiettivo è stato chiaramente stabilito di creare le condizioni per formare una nuova area urbana qualificata con un'attenta convivenza multiuso, in cui potevano essere istituite nuove attività ad alto reddito e nuove attività logistiche e commerciali che beneficiano della maggiore accessibilità che le nuove infrastrutture di trasporto introdurrà sul posto, ma anche attività per lavorare nel parco che sono interessati a rimanere. Tutto ciò favorisce anche le aree destinate all'uso residenziale in prossimità del nostro sito.
