The theme of the thesis concerns the design of a social infrastructure located in the Chinese region of Guangdong, which treatment develops the thematic of the market, as a public space and social attractor: particularly, the project focuses on the design of a wet market, very common commercial space typology in the South-East Asia, inside those it is developed a social relationship’s network alive and dynamic. Cause of the absence of heating and cooling systems in the houses of the area, it has been chosen to operate totally with passive functioning, with the adoption of strategies in order to guarantee comfort throughout the year, using simple solutions that don't require specialised manpower. The project is located in an area called Middle ground, the land between the small villages of the rural area and the Mainland China’s big cities. Compared to the metropolis along the East coast, it is rearward and without an identity, where people’s dailylife is mainly connected to the agricoltural aspects. From an analysis in term of public spaces and social dynamics, it has emerged a very deep economical and educational gap between urban and rural areas, that entails from a social point of view a population mainly composed by children and elderly people. The education becomes a way to let this two social categories interact, in a conception completely different from the traditional school, or rather a 'school-farm', therefore the idea is to create not a static, but a dynamic and alive school. The complex developed, that is the result of a long analysis of the social-economical context, poses itself as an intervention of revitalisation in this area and aims to let coexist two functions which combination could appear incompatible, a market with a school, but that can originate interesting implications in the concept of architecture. The project, located in Dahuzhai village, in a particular and suggestive place that evokes singular emotions, through a bond between history, tourism and tradition, it has been developed at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, following an innovative design approach that conceives the functional study based on the maquette. The intervention look forward to the future, through the revitalisation of an area with a missing identity, the Mainland China’s Middle ground, in order to make it an attractive pole for the local community and the tourists that visit the surroundings, in a place where there will not be just a simple exchange of goods, but also a dynamic exchange of knowledge.
