According to recent reports, only 55% of the european railway network is electrified. Currently, almost the entirety of the train fleet operating on non-electrified railways consists of diesel locomotives. Several alternatives are being considered, among which, battery electric multiple units (BEMU). To date, this technology has been tested only for light 2-car or 3-car vehicles; therefore, in this thesis, the feasibility of a battery energy storage system for a medium sized (500-600 passengers) multiple-unit is assessed. The latest developments in the BEMU field are presented, together with the state-of-the-art of the reachargeable batteries technology. The main challenges that have to be addressed in order to charge a large capacity battery pack mounted on a rolling stock are introduced. Taking into account the 66.4 km section of the Faentina Railway (Ferrovia Faentina) between Borgo S. Lorenzo and Faenza, a battery sizing for a 4/5-car multiple unit is performed, considering suitable commercialy available batteries. Furthermore, in order to assess the behaviour of the proposed battery pack, a model of the BEMU is designed in the software Simulink, and the operation of the vehicle between two stops of the considered line is simulated.

Abstract
Furthermore, in order to assess the behaviour of the proposed battery pack, a model of the BEMU is designed in the software Simulink, and the operation of the vehicle between two stops of the considered line is simulated.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
