The aim of this thesis is the development of a method for evaluating the quality of a welded joint. This method is applied to an ultrasonic welding process: the quality of the joint is mostly determined by its maximum tensile strength and can be improved by a uniform pressure distribution applied on the material during the ultrasonic process. The pressure distribution between sonotrode and anvil has been measured experimentally and algorithms have been developed for data analysis. The developed algorithms are the subject of a patent application and therefore not described in detail in this abstract. The uncertainty of the method has been quantified with procedures derived by the ISO GUM. In the second part of the thesis, tests are described to identify the effects of certain types of disturbances on the accuracy of the proposed method. The tests made it possible to identify the optimal characteristics of the measuring system.
