The present experimental master thesis is based on near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), an investigation technique that exploits laser pulses to retrieve information about the measured targets properties. In particular it focuses on the execution and the analysis of characterization measurements of a high power Time-Domain (TD) NIRS device, developed at the Department of Physics of Politecnico di Milano, in order to assess its performances. The first step of this work is the introduction to the theoretical dissertation of the TD-NIRS technique, which includes the description of the main physical quantities, the mathematical solutions, and the method of data acquisition and analysis. Then the operating scheme of the instrument and its modular structure are described, and its technical specifications are shown. Finally the characterization measurements of the device are presented. The basic performances in terms of hardware and measure characteristics are assessed by following international standardized protocols. Other measurements are executed and displayed in order to verify the operating conditions and limits of the instrument. This thesis includes also the implementation of innovative measurements which exploit its potentiality with respect to the state of the art of the TD technique. Expected, unexpected and promising results, together with possible applications, are described in this thesis.
