Metro Boulot Dodo. Adaption and rehabilitation of Saint Ornano station La Petite Ceinture

In 1852 when Napoleon III was the emperor of France, the order was given to his Prefect of Seine, “Haussman” to build a new belt of railway around Paris, just inside the walls of the city to connect the main stations of the national railway network in the city, bring construction material to each corner let the citizens travel the fastest way around Paris. This belt is named “La Petite Ceinture” (the little belt) and it kept helping the transportation of the city until 1930 when the metro of Paris became so strong that it got almost abandoned. Today, after 90 years of abandonment, this railway is becoming more plant diversity and a wild void inside Paris than a transportation system. Meanwhile since the city of Paris, like so many other big cities around the world is suffering from lack of space and function complexities of the 21st century’s community, new activities are starting to happen officially or not, around this huge void. Activities ranging from agriculture, sports, commercials, event and so many other very contemporary uses. In the Northern part of La Petite Ceinture, “Ornano station”, one of the most complex situations is happening. The neighborhood is the gate trough one of the biggest flea markets in the world and the site itself is hosting different temporary markets, an urban public garden and a multi-functional sustainable bar called La Recyclerie” a simple walk through this context gives the idea of how complex is the contemporary functional arrangements and how connections between different levels make the users suffer from lack of space and floatiness. This thesis is to bring all of these functions, arrange, connect and with the help of flexibility make all of the activities which are all depended on each other work the best possible. It worth mentioning that one of the most important features which can help this aim to happen is the fact of “what temporary means and what is temporary in different scales of both time and space”. The strategy is to use the most significant element of the site which is “the connection” as a feature and base for any other activities. In other words, the staircases, corridors and entrances are not only places to pass they are to bring social life and activities happen inside them or be attached to them. The main elements are 2 staircases that connect different parts of the site, an organization through the existing functions like urban agriculture, bar, performances, events and green stops and a simple connection with the equipment for the gardeners to reach to unreachable green points of the site.

Nel 1852 quando Napoleone III era imperatore di Francia, fu dato al suo prefetto di Senna, "Haussman" di costruire una nuova cintura ferroviaria attorno a Parigi, proprio all'interno delle mura della città per collegare le principali stazioni della ferrovia nazionale rete in città, portare materiale da costruzione in ogni angolo per consentire ai cittadini di viaggiare nel modo più veloce per Parigi. Questa cintura è chiamata "La Petite Ceinture" (la piccola cintura) e ha continuato ad aiutare il trasporto della città fino al 1930, quando la metropolitana di Parigi divenne così forte da essere quasi abbandonata. Oggi, dopo 90 anni di abbandono, questa ferrovia sta diventando più diversità vegetale e un vuoto selvaggio all'interno di Parigi di un sistema di trasporto. Il quartiere è la porta di accesso a uno dei più grandi mercati delle pulci del mondo e il sito stesso ospita diversi mercati temporanei, un giardino pubblico urbano e un bar sostenibile multifunzionale chiamato La Recyclerie ”una semplice passeggiata attraverso questo contesto dà l'idea di quanto sono complesse le disposizioni funzionali contemporanee e come le connessioni tra i diversi livelli fanno soffrire gli utenti a causa della mancanza di spazio e galleggiamento. Questa tesi è di portare tutte queste funzioni, organizzare, collegare e con l'aiuto della flessibilità rendere tutte le attività che dipendono l'una dall'altra nel miglior modo possibile. Vale la pena ricordare che una delle caratteristiche più importanti che possono aiutare a raggiungere questo obiettivo è il fatto di "cosa significa temporaneo e cosa è temporaneo in diverse scale sia del tempo che dello spazio". La strategia è quella di utilizzare l'elemento più significativo del sito che è "la connessione" come funzionalità e base per qualsiasi altra attività. In altre parole, le scale, i corridoi e gli ingressi non sono solo luoghi in cui passare, ma portano la vita sociale e le attività si svolgono al loro interno o vi si attaccano. Gli elementi principali sono 2 scale che collegano diverse parti del sito, un'organizzazione attraverso le funzioni esistenti come l'agricoltura urbana, bar, spettacoli, eventi e soste verdi e una semplice connessione con l'attrezzatura per i giardinieri per raggiungere i punti verdi irraggiungibili del luogo.
