Marine power systems are becoming more and more complex and sophisticated. The trend towards electrification of thrusters and other loads onboard ships, as well as the increasing dimensions and installed amount of power, further increase complexity. Consequently, there is a need to properly train onboard officers and personnel who run and manage the ship's power system on a daily basis. Regulation of generators, load management and load shedding, identification and reaction to alarm conditions are examples of operations where proper preparation is critical. In this work we describe the main features of a marine power system, focusing especially on control, automation, supervision, and alarm management. We then present a real time simulation system, designed for training purposes, by which it is possible to reproduce the behavior of generators and other components of the power system in a realistic way. The system has been validated and built and is currently in use at the ABB facility in Genoa.

Abstract
The system has been validated and built and is currently in use at the ABB facility in Genoa.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
