This thesis work aims at the musealization of the archaeological site of the Baths of Caracalla, combining the function of monument of a very well-preserved thermal system and the function of theater which has now become an integral part of the area. In fact, since 1937 the Antoniane Baths have always hosted the Opera House during the summer season, with different stages and taking advantage of the different thermal baths in different ways as scenography, sometimes even in a quite invasive way. The role of scenographic backdrop only diminishes the museum area potential, and represents a cause of degradation, contrasting with the unitary use of the archaeological monument. The current staging of the theater placed in the archaeological site was designed following a major restoration and redevelopment work on the system that had been compromised by previous structures over the years: despite this, it is an invasive intervention that does not enhance the site. This is not because it damages the ruins, but because it does not make accessible a part of the site, where there are interesting archaeological finds. Today, therefore, this structure does not dialogue very well with the archaeological site in which it is located: the Antoniane Baths are the backdrop and static setting for opera performances and concerts, but they do not derive any benefit from the presence of this stage and these stands. Indeed visitors are not allowed to admire the north-east facade, which is the most significant and characteristic of the settlement, for a large part of the year. For this reason, in this thesis, an attempt was made to properly combine the function of the Theater with that of the archaeological site, so that the visitors of one and the other attraction could enjoy both functions. To do this, a theater has been designed within the perimeter of the calidarium, which incorporates the original volumes of this building. The reversible structure integrates with its volume at the plant without camouflaging itself, thus perceiving the original proportions of the thermal baths to the spectator and making usable a greater area of the archaeological site. In the same way, the spectator of the theater can walk and enjoy the archaeological site to access it and feel part of a whole. Thus the Lanciani Garden was also freed, making it totally accessible and allowing visitors to admire the north-west elevation in its entirety. With the aim of completing the museum display of the archaeological site inside the Theater, there is a museum layout under the arches. Here you can first see the remaining ruins of the south- west side of the calidarium. On the first floor instead there is an exhibition of the drawings and representations of the Baths of Caracalla over the centuries, which have inspired and have been used as a reference for the “reconstruction” of the calidarium as it is. They gave shape to the volume of the Theater. Finally, on the second floor videos and photographs will tell the history of the Baths of Caracalla since they became an Opera Theater in 1937 till nowadays and which are the highlights that characterized both of them as a center of encounter and socialization.
