The thesis project, ComMan Ground, is developed as an answer for the urgent need of a new way of collective dwelling. What makes it different from the traditional concepts of co-living is its approach and strategy. Regardless of the care of affordability, people firstly have the priority to get a full presence of their personal needs and preferences, while sharing services and spaces. The aim of the project is to find and apply the proper balance between individuality and collectiveness. Co-living is a concept that started a century ago. There are built examples everywhere in the world, some of which are still in use today. For different reasons, none of them has been successful enough. As in science, we have to consider the origins, so the starting point of ‘what a home is’, in order to understand how to make it work in the future. Living, working and acting together has been an essential part of people’s everyday life since the beginning of humanity. Because of that, we are overfilled with diverse studies and opinions on the topic that can be argued and understood in many ways. One is for sure, as people say “Sharing is caring”, so the act of collectiveness cannot be forsaken or overlooked as part of our lifecycle. Today, we are witnessing a globalised world where the population is ageing and getting denser, urbanisation is in its highest peak and land is becoming as exclusive as it has never been. At the same time, the economy is causing difficulties that are recalling the need for building in an affordable manner. Due to the consequences of the post-industrial modern society, people are exposed to different issue stratifications that are resulting in global loneliness. All the mentioned complications need to be strongly considered in order to preserve humanity. As being part of the historical development, the concept of togetherness is a substantial factor for overcoming difficulties. As the poet John Donne has said in 1624, “No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the Continent, a part of the main.” One of the biggest inspirations for the establishment of this project has been the humanistic approach of the architect Jan Gehl. While always keeping in mind his words: “First life, then spaces, then buildings - the other way around never works”, I have developed a concept for a new way of dwelling, which mainly focuses on the human factor. By applying the findings of the not so popular science of neuroaesthetics, the future inhabitants of ComMan Ground would have the possibility to design their private spaces by the use of their own senses which will result in a completely identical vision. We are all absolutely unique and individual, especially in the way we perceive the surrounding world. For this reason, we have to be very careful when planning spaces especially for more than one inhabitant. Therefore, the shared areas of ComMan Ground are designed to be suitable for more people. They are physically neutral and balanced, aiming for a fluid humanised environment, where people could attain better well-being and so higher levels of satisfaction on a daily basis. This is done with the help not only of the mentioned science but also by the inclusion of natural elements and care of a healthier environment.
