Rethinking Gezi Park and protests. Urbanization dynamics of Istanbul in the course of last 40 years

The purpose of the thesis is to better understand Gezi Protests of 2013, in Istanbul and to propose an urban project regarding Gezi Park. According to Henri Lefebvre, to grasp production of space we should have a holistic point of view which analyzes latent dynamics underneath the urbanization process. Therefore, in the first chapter, thesis focuses on urbanization chronology of Istanbul over the last 40 years. While the study analyzes the urbanization dynamics of Istanbul simultaneously examines the social, political and economic context of Turkey from 1980s until 2020. In the second chapter, the study focuses mainly on Gezi Protests and the results of this revolt after 2013. Finally, thesis concludes with a proposal regarding Gezi Park. An urban project which aims to create a public space for everyone which belongs to everyone.

L’oggetto della tesi è focalizzato su una migliore comprensione della protesta in Turchia del 2013 a Istanbul denominata “Gezi” e, inoltre, proporre un progetto di urbanistica che riguarda il “Parco Gezi”. Secondo Henri Lefebvre, per meglio capire la produzione dello spazio dovremmo avere un punto di vista olistico che analizza le dinamiche latenti sottostanti al processo di urbanizzazione. Il primo capitolo della tesi tratta della cronologia dell’urbanizzazione di Istanbul degli ultimi 40 anni. All’interno dello stesso, contemporaneamente alle dinamiche di urbanistica di Istanbul, si approfondisce l’evoluzione degli sviluppi sociali, politici ed economici del contesto turco dagli anni 80’ ad oggi. Nel secondo capitolo, vengono analizzate le proteste relative al “Parco Gezi” e le loro conseguenze dopo l’anno 2013. Infine, la tesi si conclude con una proposta riguardante un nuovo progetto urbanistico per l’area del “Parco Gezi”, con lo scopo di creare uno spazio pubblico per tutti, che appartenga a tutti.
