Streets in India have traditionally been the public spaces around which social life has revolved. They constitute the urban public realm where people congregate, celebrate and interact. The everyday life in the Indian context is characterized by a strong aspect of informality and temporality, which makes it a unique and particular case study. The hypothesis that forms the basis of this thesis is that there is a need to understand and design these urban streets as living corridors through which one perceives and understand the city, and the places where one has daily social encounters. In the contemporary cities the space for social interaction is constantly reduced in small areas, so study the kinetic Indian city is important to understand the mechanism that allow the creation of small flexible public space in different part of the city. Using Ahmedabad as a case study, this thesis analyzes different categories of public space and identifies its characteristics, in order to understand its point of strenght and weakness and to replicate them in a better way. The big concern about public space in India, such as streets, market, garden, is that these spaces are almost spontanous and there is a big lack of planning beside them. On the other hand, when the spaces are planned and proper design it could be possible that the citizens don't recognize them and they remain unlived. Through this process of analysis and understanding of the Indian city, I propose a urban strategy of revitalization of a street in Ahmedabad. This revitalization is possible thank to urban tools that can be used to assess, plan and design streets and spaces that are at the same time planned, usable, pleasant and recognized by citizens.

Abstract
This revitalization is possible thank to urban tools that can be used to assess, plan and design streets and spaces that are at the same time planned, usable, pleasant and recognized by citizens.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
