Pagano : dall'interscambio alla città. Nuovi paradigmi dell'abitare contemporaneo

The thesis aims to investigate the theme of tall buildings looking at the urban transformations already carried out or still under construction in Milan. Looking at the shape of the buildings and the spatial organization generated by the construction of the new towers, we can see an actual break with the Milanese tradition. Attention has been paid not only to the single architectural object, but to the way how the same building relates to the open space, to the connecting and stitching role that the new urban projects can play and to the symbolic meaning of a tower in urban context. Thanks to the recovery of huge abandoned industrial complexes, the functional reconversion of entire urban portions and the redevelopment of residual areas, Milan has changed its look in the last years. The focus of the research project is the transformation of the Pagano area which is now a urban threshold between two specific identities: on the first side there is the consolidated historical city with the typical compact blocks from the nineteenth-century matrix, on the other side there are the post-war experiments made of free bodies. The project wants to connect the two different identities of the place by inserting a vertical element in the center of the design area, having a strong visual impact, able to combine the base and the square that identify the design of the public space. This figure performs as a stage backdrop on a larger scale compared to the context that roots in a series of urban hypotheses thus giving a leading role to the Sempione and its structure in a constant dialogue with the existing Milanese tradition.

La tesi vuole indagare il tema degli edifici alti e volge uno sguardo alle trasformazioni urbane realizzate o in corso di realizzazione a Milano. Guardando la forma degli edifici e l’organizzazione spaziale che si è generata con la costruzione delle nuove torri, si nota una effettiva rottura rispetto alla tradizione milanese. L’attenzione viene rivolta non solo al singolo oggetto architettonico, ma al modo in cui l’edificio si relaziona con lo spazio aperto, al ruolo di connessione e cucitura che i nuovi progetti urbani possono giocare ed alla valenza simbolica della torre nel contesto urbano. Grazie al recupero di vasti complessi industriali dismessi, alla riconversione funzionale di intere porzioni urbane e alla riqualificazione di aree residuali, negli ultimi anni Milano ha cambiato il suo aspetto. Il progetto di ricerca ha come oggetto la trasformazione dell’area di Pagano che si presenta come una soglia urbana tra due identità ben definite: da un lato abbiamo la presenza della città storica consolidata con i tipici isolati compatti di matrice ottocentesca, dall’altro invece troviamo le sperimentazioni della città del dopoguerra costruita per corpi liberi. Il progetto vuole mettere in relazione le due diverse identità del luogo attraverso l’innesto al centro dell’area di progetto di un elemento verticale, dal forte impatto visivo, capace di unire il basamento e la piazza che identificano il progetto dello spazio pubblico. Questa figura si esibisce come una quinta scenica di scala maggiore rispetto al contesto che si radica in una serie di ipotesi urbane che danno un ruolo preminente al Sempione e alla sua struttura in un continuo dialogo con le preesistenze e con la tradizione milanese.
