The industry of cement production around the world is increasing day by day following the increasing need of residential building, this is correlated to the daily population increase, in this project I try to analyse the possible methods to think as an architect of solutions that blocks the cement, and I studied many factors to select at the end Lebanon as a case study, in side Lebanon the most polluted cities where polluted because of the cement industry, especially a city called Chekka, which has a crisis because of having two cement factories and two large quarries that feed the factories with the raw material to produce cement, it’s all happening close to the residential areas, and this situation threatens the life of the people in Chekka, The study of the situation gave me a conclusion to do 3 main lanes that help blocking the cement industry in this city, first is using one of the important potentials in the city which is the forest, the city has a neglected forest that can be sustainably reforested in order to be a part of the solution, the trees of the forest will sequester Th carbon dioxide that emits from the factories. the second lane to block the cement industry impact is provide and alternative way of building using a different sustainable material, which in this case would be the timber that comes out from the forest, hence, as an architect I’m interested in providing a timber factory to the city, accompanied with a school of teaching how to build with timber. The third lane is providing the existing cement factory with clean energy instead of the risky way they use to produce energy, they use coal as a raw material to be burnt and give the required thermal energy, Having a green power plant in the city would be the missing stone in the circle of blocking the impacts of the cement industry, in addition, the city has already a crisis in energy, it’s apparent with the people’s complains of the electricity cut off continuously. After studying the needs and the required program of each of these lanes comes the site selection, the selected site is an overlap of different maps that are showing many factors like soil erosion, green cover, land use and contour lines, the analysis of the selected site showed very interesting issues about the agro-biodiversity, because the site is abandoned quarry, and it used to be a forest before being a quarry, in this Thesis project the focus is on the site where there is the power plants.
