Seismic safety regulations were only added to Italian building codes in the mid-1970s, for limited parts of the territory. There are currently many buildings in Italy that were constructed before this date and without seismic calculations. In order to keep those buildings in use, it is necessary to study their seismic vulnerability and to make interventions, if necessary. For public buildings or the ones that are listed as a cultural heritage, seismic safety has even higher importance. The case study which is analysed in this thesis is a library with modern style architecture and concrete structure with a complex and irregular design. It was built between 1974 and 1980 in the absence of seismic regulations. It is designed by the well-known Italian architect Giancarlo De Carlo as a part of the Urbino university colleges located in the city of Urbino in the Marche region of Italy and has a high architectural value. To study the structure response spectrum analysis has been performed; considering the importance of these university buildings, local response analysis had been carried out for the site. From this analysis a site-specific response spectrum was derived. The structural analysis of the building has been performed using both such local response spectrum and the standard one derived from the building code. After completing the structural analysis and identifying the problem, proper intervention strategies have been tested and compared. The goal was to find a solution that could improve the structural performance, without interfering with the function of the spaces, and that would be distinguishable from the original elements.
Le prime norme moderne per le costruzioni in zona sismica furono emesse in Italia a metà degli anni settanta del secolo scorso, limitatamente ad alcune parti del territorio. Molti edifici in Italia sono stati costruiti prima, senza mettere in conto l’azione sismica. Per poter mantenere molti di questi edifici in uso, è necessario valutarne la vulnerabilità sismica ed eventualmente eseguire interventi per il loro adeguamento. Per gli edifici pubblici e per quelli classificati come beni culturali, la sicurezza sismica ha importanza ancora maggiore. Il caso studio analizzato in questa tesi è una biblioteca in uno stile architettonico moderno e struttura in cemento armato, con uno schema complesso e irregolare. Fu costruito tra il 1974 e il 1980 senza applicare normative sismiche. Il progetto è del noto architetto Giancarlo De Carlo; l’edificio è parte dei Collegi Universitari della città di Urbino, nella regione Marche, e ha grande valore architettonico. Per studiare la struttura è stata sviluppata un’analisi con spettro di risposta; considerando l’importanza della costruzione era stata condotta un’analisi di risposta sismica locale, dalla quale è stato ottenutoo lo spettro di risposta specifico del sito. L’analisi strutturale dell’edificio è stata eseguita facendo riferimento sia a questo spettro che allo spettro standard fornito dalle norme. In seguito all’analisi strutturale si sono potuti individuare alcuni elementi critici e sono state proposte diverse strategie di intervento, paragonandone l’efficacia. L’obiettivo è stato di trovare una soluzione che potesse migliorare il comportamento strutturale senza interferire con la funzione degli spazi e che potesse rimanere distinguibile dagli elementi originali.
