The purpose of this thesis is to investigate and analyze office workplaces, with the particular accent on common spaces, aiming to improve their design in such a way to contribute to more pleasant, adequate and tailored environment and, accordingly, increase satisfaction, productivity and creativity levels of the users. Discussing ongoing trends, well-being standards, and activity-based layout organization, the emotional aspect is taken into consideration as the significant one as well. Bearing in mind strong impact of physical environment on human psyche, both consciously and unconsciously, and, therefore, human behavior, it is clear that design process and methods should apply principles and conclusions of place science. What is more, integrated in design, those principles could help in controlling and achieving certain goals related to the overall work outcome. In particular, common spaces at the universities represent an opportunity for interaction encouragement and creativity boost, together creating crucial and perfect background for innovation support and development. The design proposal is a result of, above mentioned, research done and applied at the space in the building of School of Design of Politecnico di Milano, in Bovisa Campus. Faculty area is dedicated for coworking activities with highly flexible organization, integrated technology and smart systems, and considering sustainability issues through the choice of furniture and materials. The environment is carefully designed to support needs and requirements of design department users, allowing them to easily adapt to several challenges during different periods of semesters, both physically and psychologically. The history of the university and its significance, as well as its mission, are incorporated in the space through different elements, contributing to Politecnico unique identity.
