The highest point of Grand Canal of China : the Green City master plan of Nanwang town and its new civic complex

The thesis seeks to explore the sustainable renovation of the Jinghang Grand Canal based on the case study of the Nanwang town in Jining, China which is the highest point of the Grand Canal. By utilizing the urban design and architecture methodology, this thesis develops a Master plan of the town and detail design in the preserved area and civic centre in different periods. In phase 1, we focused on the analysis of different urban and architectural design approaches that emerged under the reconstruction of other districts along the Beijing‐Hangzhou Grand Canal. In phase 2, we proposed a sustainable way to design the overall Master Plan based on the current green system which is to superimpose a network of “green finger” used as pedestrian streets onto the existing urban fabric. In phase 3, we step to Grand Canal-preserved area design stage and develop it into a public garden utilizing the principle of Chinese Garden meanwhile create a collection of urban memories which are derived from cities along the canal. In phase 4, By using the law of northern Chinese courtyard, we design the civic complex located in the heart of a preserved area which contains commerce, government’s administration office, civic centre and public square towards ruins. The thesis aims to enhance the space vitality by activating central preserved area, to promote the spirit of the surrounding area of the town with the vitality of the central area by superimposing civic complex in heart, and further promote the town’s orderly and sustainable development.

La tesi cerca di esplorare il rinnovamento sostenibile del Canal Grande di Jinghang sulla base del case study della città di Nanwang a Jining, in Cina, che è il punto più alto del Canal Grande. Utilizzando la metodologia del design urbano e dell'architettura, questa tesi sviluppa un piano generale della città e la progettazione dei dettagli nell'area protetta e nel centro civico in diversi periodi. Nella fase 1, ci siamo concentrati sull'analisi dei diversi approcci di progettazione urbana e architettonica emersi durante la ricostruzione di altri distretti lungo il Canal Grande di Pechino-Hangzhou. Nella fase 2, abbiamo proposto un modo sostenibile per progettare il piano generale generale basato sull'attuale sistema verde che consiste nel sovrapporre una rete di "dito verde" utilizzata come strade pedonali sul tessuto urbano esistente. Nella fase 3, passiamo alla fase di progettazione dell'area protetta del Canal Grande e la trasformiamo in un giardino pubblico utilizzando il principio del giardino cinese, nel frattempo creiamo una raccolta di memorie urbane che derivano dalle città lungo il canale. Nella fase 4, utilizzando la legge del cortile della Cina settentrionale, progettiamo il complesso civico situato nel cuore di un'area protetta che contiene commercio, ufficio amministrativo del governo, centro civico e piazza pubblica verso le rovine. La tesi mira a migliorare la vitalità dello spazio attivando l'area centrale preservata, a promuovere lo spirito dell'area circostante della città con la vitalità dell'area centrale sovrapponendo il complesso civico nel cuore e promuovere ulteriormente lo sviluppo ordinato e sostenibile della città.
