Abstract
The difficulty of accessing both the housing market and the labor market due to the unstable economic condition has altered the configuration of living and working in Italy and the relation among them. This project aims to propose a strategical solution and a new scenario in which the house becomes spatial support to accommodate and to contribute reactivating the economic conditions of people who need a housing experience that goes beyond the endowment of a roof over their heads in a traditional accommodation. Based on the research of the coexistence of living and working through history defined as productive environments, the survey of targeted profiles and the investigation of public abandoned buildings, the design project provides affordable dwelling spaces along with productive environments for specific groups of people in need, by defining new domestic solutions obtained from adaptive reuse of the non-residential public abandoned building. The former Liceo Omero school, located in the northern outskirt of Milan, is selected as the site to be transformed and reused. The original existing building is regenerated and reused while an extension is added to create density and connection. project embedded six living-working typologies that coexist with public productive environments that offer its inhabitants the chance to share abilities, competencies, and job opportunities as well as to fulfil the accommodation needs. The new Omero school becomes not only a productive affordable housing but also a community center that links and connects the opportunities and activities while producing positive effects on its surroundings. The purpose of the project is to entail a strategy that can be adjustably applied to other abandoned public buildings, in order to improve labor and housing opportunities through productive affordable environments, while providing a feasible approach to the reuse of abandoned buildings located into fragile contexts.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
