This thesis introduces a “tech-based” design process that aims at identifying future application scenarios starting from a product-development technology that is proprietary and/or that characterizes the company, considering together both its innovation and the market requirements that most influence corporate competitiveness. As the corporate approach changes, it will be possible to obtain different results: scenarios that respond to the trends of the reference market and/or new markets in which the technology could be successfully applied. The proposed process offers a meeting point between the creative and technological development processes. These processes usually move in parallel, but they are unlikely to meet in the business and product development process. From the point of view of the creative process, technological development is considered simply as a means to satisfy the client's requirements and needs; vice versa in technological development processes, in some cases significant innovations are reached without having clear what is the potential scenario of application of the outputs, which therefore may remain unexpressed. The proposed process is divided into two consequential workshops, conducted by external consultants in which internal figures of the company from different departments participate. Through various activities, the process aims at cross-departmental contamination and synergy thus avoiding the fragmentation of knowledge and strategic objectives. The ultimate goal of the process is the identification, among the proposed solutions, of three scenarios of applications that can feed the company pipeline respectively over a period of 0-1, 2-3 and 3-5 years. These scenarios will be identified objectively through evaluation and the combined use of different tools, some of which are here introduced for the first time. The process outputs support R&D both in the scenario generation phase and in the decision-making phase of the company strategies linked to them. The proposed process has been successfully tested and validated by the consultancy firm BTS Design Innovation.
La tesi propone un processo di design “tech-based” che ha lo scopo di identificare scenari di applicazione futuri per una tecnologia di sviluppo prodotto proprietaria e/o caratterizzante l'azienda, considerando sia la sua innovazione che i requisiti di mercato che influenzano la competitività aziendale. Al variare dell’approccio aziendale sarà possibile ottenere risultati diversi: scenari che rispondono ai trend del mercato di riferimento e/o nuovi mercati in cui la tecnologia potrebbe essere applicata con successo. Il processo proposto propone un punto di incontro tra i processi creativi e quelli di sviluppo tecnologico. Tali processi solitamente si sviluppano in modi paralleli, ma difficilmente trovano punti di incontro all'interno del processo aziendale e di sviluppo prodotto. Dal punto di vista del processo creativo, lo sviluppo tecnologico viene considerato semplicemente come un mezzo per soddisfare i requisiti normativi o i bisogni del cliente; viceversa nei processi di sviluppo tecnologico, in alcuni casi si va in contro ad innovazioni rilevanti senza aver chiaro quale sia il potenziale scenario di applicazione degli output che rimangono quindi inespressi. Il processo proposto è suddiviso in due workshop consequenziali, condotti da consulenti esterni a cui partecipano figure interne all’azienda provenienti da diversi dipartimenti. Attraverso diverse attività, il processo mira alla contaminazione ed alla sinergia interdipartimentale contrastando quindi la frammentazione delle conoscenze e degli obiettivi strategici. Fine ultimo del processo è l'identificazione, tra le soluzioni proposte, di tre scenari di applicazioni che possano alimentare la pipeline aziendale rispettivamente nell’arco temporale di 0-1, 2-3 e 3-5 anni. Tali scenari saranno identificati in modo oggettivo attraverso una valutazione e l'utilizzo combinato di diversi strumenti, alcuni dei quali inediti. Gli output del processo supporteranno all'R&D sia nella fase di generazione degli scenari di applicazione tecnologica che nella fase decisionale delle strategie aziendali legate ad essi. Il processo proposto è stato testato e validato dalla società di consulenza BTS Design Innovation.
