A significant gap between the time of development of non-programmable generation plants for renewable energy and the National Grid expansion occurs in Sicily. This delay is mainly caused by bureaucracy and by the length of the permitting process. Another relevant issue is related to the number of connection applications of new production units for wind power generation (and, generally, for RES plants): it is typically ten times higher than the number of plants that finalize the connection process. In this work, the development of new wind farms in Sicily has been simulated for the next decade in order to study the relevant impact on the network. Our findings highlight the critical issues related to the exploitation of the high RES potential of Sicily, and underline the benefits for the electrical system given by the installation of new production units.

Abstract
A significant gap between the time of development of non-programmable generation plants for renewable energy and the National Grid expansion occurs in Sicily. This delay is mainly caused by bureaucracy and by the length of the permitting process. Another relevant issue is related to the number of connection applications of new production units for wind power generation (and, generally, for RES plants): it is typically ten times higher than the number of plants that finalize the connection process. In this work, the development of new wind farms in Sicily has been simulated for the next decade in order to study the relevant impact on the network. Our findings highlight the critical issues related to the exploitation of the high RES potential of Sicily, and underline the benefits for the electrical system given by the installation of new production units.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
