Exploradio, radio globale tra fisico e digitale

What values and advantages of the physical world can we consider in designing for listening to music? This question led to a search between the two worlds of the physical and digital, between past and present and in a past that becomes future. Digitization has led to indisputable advantages: speed, comfort, lightness, flexibility. The evolution of the devices has thus been characterized by constant dematerialisation but in recent years the material and tactile dimension that old technologies can offer, such as a turntable or a Piaggio Vespa from the 1960s, is increasingly appreciated. Today and in the years to come, tangible elements and information successfully coexist in systems and products. The radio, as a fundamental means of today's music listening, was the starting point for the design of Exploradio, a receiver that winks at the shortwave radio receivers, often equipped with a flat geographical map or a globe world map as the famous 1933 Globe Radio designed by Raymond Loewy. The typology of shortwave radios connects the radio medium to the possibility of exploring the world, as during a trip. Exploradio reinterprets this typology and expands its possibilities with the internet that, also through websites and social networks, represents the augmented future of radio itself. The dream of traveling the world through shortwave radio becomes more real with a project that uses internet radio technology and other web resources to listen to music and radio broadcasts from all over the world. The result is a comfortable and suggestive observatory on the music and culture of the places on earth. Three functions have been added to the possibility of listening to music and radio, which enrich the experience of knowledge of world cultures: video calls, social and news modes. In the interaction the digital component manifests itself with immediacy and comfort while, references to the physical world in the interaction with the display, tangibility and materiality make the user-system relationship intuitive, oriented, rich, aware and easily guided in the browsing experience.

Quali valori e vantaggi del mondo fisico possiamo considerare nella progettazione legata all'ascolto di musica? Questo quesito ha portato ad una ricerca tra i due mondi del fisico e del digitale, tra passato e presente e in un passato che diventa futuro. La digitalizzazione ha portato a vantaggi indiscutibili: velocità, comodità, leggerezza, flessibilità. L'evoluzione dei dispositivi è stata così caratterizzata da una costante dematerializzazione ma negli ultimi anni è sempre più apprezzata la dimensione materica e tattile che possono offrire vecchie tecnologie che siano un giradischi o una Piaggio Vespa degli anni '60. Oggi e negli anni a venire, elementi tangibili e informazioni coesistono con successo in sistemi e prodotti. La radio, come mezzo fondamentale nell'ascolto musicale odierno, è stata il punto di partenza per la progettazione di Exploradio, ricevitore che strizza l'occhio alle radio a onde corte, dotate spesso di mappa geografica o di vero e proprio mappamondo come la celebre Globe Radio del 1933 disegnata da Raymond Loewy. La tipologia delle radio a onde corte collega il mezzo radio alla possibilità di esplorare il mondo, come durante un viaggio. Exploradio reinterpreta questa tipologia e ne amplia di gran lunga le possibilità con internet che, anche attraverso siti web e social, rappresenta il futuro aumentato della radio stessa. Il sogno di viaggiare il mondo attraverso la radio ad onde corte diventa più reale con un progetto che si avvale della tecnologia internetradio e di altre risorse del web per ascoltare musica e trasmissioni radiofoniche da tutto il mondo. Il risultato è un comodo e suggestivo osservatorio sulla musica e la cultura dei luoghi della terra. Alla possibilità di ascoltare musica e radio sono state aggiunte tre funzioni che arricchiscono l'esperienza di conoscenza delle culture del mondo: modalità videochiamate, social e notizie. Nell'interazione la componente digitale si manifesta con l'immediatezza e la comodità mentre, richiami al mondo fisico nell'interazione con il display, tangibilità e materialità rendono il rapporto utilizzatore-sistema intuitivo, orientato, ricco, consapevole e guidato con facilità nell'esperienza di navigazione.
