The unique, ambient and intimate garden setting will be the perfect location for that special, one-of-a-kind holiday meal. Workshops in our open, bamboo creative studio will range from sustainable building practices and techniques, to nature-led art and design and all things plant and food related. Connect with local and international practitioners engaging in community development and cultural exchange in a tropical space sure to ignite inspiration! Knowledgeable, local staff will be on hand to cater to all guest needs during their stay. The inspiration was taken from a concept of an umbrella, Which provides shelter from rain and sun. The Sri Lankan climate allows for open plan projects without the need for walls. This provides the added value of natural ventilation which remains true to the ethos of the buildings, reducing the need for materials and costs. A large, spacious central structure that functions as a reception, restaurant (12-15 tables), kitchen, bar and communal area, including two public bathrooms, with a central courtyard, in keeping with the traditional Sri Lankan courtyard home, with scope to add an outdoor terrace. We have been exploring circular, oval and curved organic shapes for this building. The considerations for the roof design are natural ventilation in a tropical climate, as well as heavy rainfall run-off, and protection of the underlying bamboo. This structure will likely be located in the northern, flatter half of the site. 6 large (approx. 40-50m2), private, en suite guest lodges with outdoor shower, and outdoor terrace overlooking the rice fields. As with the restaurant, we have been exploring curved organic shapes for these structures, which will be dotted along the boundary of the rice fields. Again, ventilation and rain will need to be considered in the roof design. Privacy between each lodge will be an important factor. A large, open structure which can function in a multi-purpose capacity as an art studio or office, a workshop or lecture space or a gallery. The same roofing considerations as above will be necessary. We are open to the positioning of this structure, however, we envisaged it potentially being in the middle of the site, between the restaurant and the guest lodgings. A yoga/meditation shala, in a raised position on the flat, isolated eastern section of the site, which is on the same level as the rice fields. This area of the site is very susceptible to water logging so any structures here will need to be raised from the ground. We will be interested to build a natural swimming pool in this same area in the future. All of these structures is designed with nature as the main inspiration. Removal of trees from the site should be kept to an absolute minimum. We have imagined that each of these buildings will be situated on pylon foundations, and raised from the ground, keeping the use of concrete to a minimum as well as providing good vantage points. With the view that all of our construction materials will be sourced locally we feel confident that we can significantly reduce our carbon footprint during the construction stages. We are eager that the guesthouse should also provide an insight into sustainable living, including dry toilet and grey water treatment systems, and eventually food production.
