On the traces of memory. Project for a landscape museum system to enhance the tangible and intangible heritage of the San Nicolò area in Mantua. Sulle tracce della memoria. Progetto per un sistema museale paesaggistico di valorizzazione del patrimonio tangibile e intangibile dell'area di San Nicolò a Mantova

The issue of memory, today as in the past, of fundamental importance, becomes in the thesis project as a search for meaning that finds its crowning glory in the recognition of the traces and signs of the past that each place has as its own heritage. The San Nicolò area is the site of a sedimentation of centuries of history, in which the remains and architectural memories of some of the most important events in the history of the city of Mantua coexist. The project identifies three thresholds from the rich schedule that defines the site: the ruins of the Abbey of San Nicolò, the Jewish cemetery and the remains of the Gonzaga's fortifications extended along the Lower Lake. The intervention concerns the creation of an integrated system of presence, accessibility, communication, enhancement and safeguarding of these historical thresholds, within the framework of their harmonization with the immediate territorial context, through design actions perfectly compatible with the general recovery plan of the area currently starting (Mantova Hub). The new is superimposed on the pre-existing with discretion and lightness, without invading the original structures allowing to grasp the original traces. The project therefore proposes the physical contact between old and new, linking the past with the future.

Il tema della memoria, oggi come in passato, di fondamentale importanza, diviene nel progetto di tesi come una ricerca di senso che trova il proprio coronamento nel riconoscimento delle tracce e dei segni del passato che ogni luogo possiede quale proprio patrimonio. L’area di San Nicolò è il luogo di una sedimentazione di secoli di storia, in cui coesistono i resti e le memorie architettoniche di alcuni dei fatti più importanti della storia della città di Mantova. Il progetto individua dal ricco palinsesto che definisce il sito tre soglie: le rovine dell’abbazia di San Nicolò, il cimitero ebraico e i resti delle fortificazioni gonzagesche estese lungo il Lago Inferiore. L’intervento riguarda la creazione di un sistema integrato di accessibilità, comunicazione, valorizzazione e salvaguardia di queste soglie storiche, nel quadro di una loro armonizzazione con l'immediato contesto territoriale, attraverso azioni progettuali perfettamente compatibili con il piano generale di recupero dell'area oggi in avvio (Mantova Hub). Il nuovo si sovrappone al pre-esitente con discrezione e leggerezza, senza invadere le strutture originali permettendo di coglierne i tracciati originari. Il progetto propone, quindi, il contatto fisico materico tra antico e nuovo, legando il passato con il futuro.
