Beyond the wall

The theme of heterotopia has been always part of human’s life whether they are aware or not. Heterotopia is not something new in our lives, but it is the first time that is defined by the French philosopher Michel Foucault in 1966. Heterotopia is a concept that is hard to explain because heterotopia (space) is about feelings and senses. From past to present, many types of heterotopic spaces were created in the light of people need such as cemeteries, prisons, free towns etc. Common point of these heterotopic spaces is that they emerged as a result of people’s need at that time. Time is very crucial for the heterotopias because they have a principle of change over time. In the light of these information, the concept of this thesis came up which is regeneration of the abandoned military area (Caserma Montello) in the city of Milano. More specifically, turning abandoned military barracks and buildings into a high-tech place is the concept. The theme of the thesis is futuristic, because Milano is already a developed city in many aspects, so its need is shaped by the modern age.

Il tema dell'eterotopia ha sempre fatto parte della vita umana. L'eterotopia non è una novità nella nostra vita, ma è la prima volta che viene definita dal filosofo francese Michel Foucault nel 1966. L'eterotopia è un concetto che è difficile da spiegare perché l'eterotopia (spazio) riguarda sentimenti e sensi. Dal passato ad oggi, molti tipi di spazi eterotopici sono stati creati alla luce delle necessità delle persone come cimiteri, carceri, città libere ecc. Il punto comune di questi spazi eterotopici è che sono emersi a causa delle necessità delle persone in quel momento. Il tempo è molto cruciale per le eterotopie perché hanno un principio di cambiamento nel tempo. Alla luce di queste informazioni, è nato il concetto di questa tesi che è la rigenerazione dell'area militare abbandonata (Caserma Montello) nella città di Milano. Più specificamente, l'idea è trasformare le caserme e gli edifici militari abbandonati in un luogo high-tech. Il tema della tesi è futuristico, perché Milano è già una città sviluppata in molti aspetti, quindi il suo bisogno è modellato dall'età moderna.
