Commons of fusion : Roosevelt Island Museum. Ruin and modern negotiation

The thesis focuses to the revival of the historic structure which is fallen into ruin and its relationship with modern architecture. The project proposal will be an architectural solution for how ruins can be used as modern-day settings with the respectful design while highlighting its old values. The Smallpox Hospital is the project building, it is a dramatic example of the crenelated Gothic Revival Style and it is located in the Roosevelt Island. The tragic history of the island is starkly visible on the interrupted and destructed walls of the historic building. The project aims up to achieve an easy harmony between the old structure and monochromatic consistency of the new modern addition. The idea of “inhabitable ruin” is giving the abandoned structure a new life while recapturing the memories of the past. The new museum function is proposed for the Smallpox Hospital to become a flexible public space. The new building for the museum is created as an entrance building which collects the people from the main access and directs them to the historical building. The design of the building avoids to overshadow the hospital and uses the linearity of the existing buildings on its shape. The two different buildings from two different periods are completing each other. The modern building uses the past for its own benefit, takes advantage of its geometry, texture and visual properties while the modern elements are trying to identify the most striking characteristics of the historical building.

Il progetto di tesi è incentrato sul rilancio della struttura storica caduta in rovina e sul suo rapporto con l’architettura moderna. La proposta progettuale sarà una soluzione architettonica che mostra come le rovine possano essere utilizzate come ambienti moderni con un design rispettoso e che metta in evidenza i suoi antichi valori. L’ospedale del vaiolo è l’edificio sul quale si interviene, è un esempio drammatico dello stile gotico revivalistico merlato e si trova a Roosevelt Island. La tragica storia dell’isola è ben visibile sulle mura interrotte e distrutte dell’edificio storico. Il progetto mira a raggiungere una chiara armonia tra la vecchia struttura e la coerenza monocromatica della nuova aggiunta moderna. L’idea di “rovina abitabile” sta dando nuova vita alla struttura abbandonata e allo stesso tempo riconquista i ricordi del passato. La nuova funzione museale si propone per l’Ospedale del vaiolo di diventare uno spazio pubblico flessibile. Il nuovo edificio per il museo è stato creato come un edificio d’ingresso che raccoglie le persone dall’accesso principale e le dirige verso l’edificio storico. L’architettura dell’edificio evita di mettere in ombra l’ospedale e prende forma seguendo la linearità degli edifici esistenti. I due diversi edifici di due periodi differenti si completano a vicenda. L’edificio moderno utilizza il passato a proprio vantaggio, sfrutta la sua geometria, struttura e proprietà estetiche, mentre gli elementi moderni cercano di individuare le caratteristiche più suggestive dell’edificio storico.
