Abstract
The recent rearrangement and redevelopment intervention on Architecture Campus of Politecnico di Milano included the construction of some buildings, located along the “edge” of the area where the historic Trifoglio and Nave buildings stand out. In the name of a common construction system, the new buildings are covered with transparent envelopes capable of allowing a visual and spatial continuity in the renewed Campus. The project includes a curtain walling system with the insertion of a specific framing element, that is a customized mullion produced with special-designed extrusion dies. This new vertical profile is part of the supporting frame of each module and its use makes the reference to the features of existing systems less reliable. In fact, under certain conditions, product manufacturers can transfer in cascade the performance values of products already in the market to the new components. In this thesis the conformity of the customized curtain walling system was examined, with the aim of certifying the performance necessary for the affixing of the CE marking. The framework of the essential characteristics indicated by the product standard was outlined, followed by an extensive evaluation of the requirements to establish the levels of performance achieved and the behavior of the façade with regard to its intended use. A representative sample of the product family was designed and built to be subjected to initial type testing. Weather resistance tests were performed to verify the correspondence between the performance expected in the design phase and the one actually achieved. The key characteristics of air permeability, watertightness and resistance to wind load have been investigated by an external notified body, with the subsequent issue of a valid test report for the purposes of system certification. The outcome of the tests was very positive as the sealing mechanism turned out to be anyhow effective and, at the same time, the entire system proved to be very rigid with limited deformations. Furthermore, it can be considered that the curtain walling has been examined in operating conditions, since a long period has elapsed between the installation of the sample and the execution of the tests. A summary statement of the calculated and tested features was prepared, with the arrangement of a declaration of performance sample for the curtain walling installed in the analyzed buildings. The study of a specific test method capable of evaluating the effects deriving from anthropic action, in this case significant and still not investigable, could represent an interesting prospect for future research.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
