AB Augusta Verona condita. Ridefinizione del sistema fortificato di Colle San Pietro per il nuovo museo della città

"It was Temple of Jupiter." With this note Gaetano Cristofali concludes the archaeological investigation of St. Peter's Hill, just before the Austrians flattened the summit terrace. Through an understanding of the history of the hill, which has always dominated the view of the river and the plain, the Genius Loci of the site is delineated, the place of the founding act of the ancient city and a point of reference for all subsequent eras. The project for the conversion of the Castel San Pietro Barracks into a new museum for the city was born from the deep interweaving of historical overlapping. The work addresses the multiple complexities of the monumental archaeological area, whose ancient remains are buried by the bulky bulk of the Austrian barracks. The project is guided by the intention to bring to the surface, through its archaeological traces, the monumentality of the hill of Castel San Pietro, which, welcoming the remains of the Roman theatre, has always been the evocative scenic backdrop of the city of Verona.

«Fu Tempio di Giove». Apponendo questa nota Gaetano Cristofali conclude l’indagine archeologica di colle San Pietro, poco prima che gli austriaci ne spianassero il terrazzamento sommitale. Attraverso la comprensione della storia del colle, che da sempre domina la vista sul fiume e sulla pianura, si delinea il Genius Loci del sito, luogo dell’atto fondativo della città antica e punto di riferimento per tutte le epoche successive. Dalla lettura del profondo intreccio delle sovrapposizioni storiche, nasce il progetto per la riconversione della Caserma di Castel San Pietro in un nuovo museo per la città. Il lavoro affronta le molteplici complessità dell’area archeologica monumentale, i cui resti antichi sono sepolti dall’ingombrante mole della caserma austriaca. Il progetto è guidato dall’intenzione di far riemergere, attraverso le sue tracce archeologiche, la monumentalità del colle di Castel San Pietro, che accogliendo i resti del teatro romano è da sempre il suggestivo fondale scenico della città di Verona.
