Post-industrial landscape (a new lifescape for Bagnoli)

Bagnoli was one of the sites of Naples’ industrialization in the early 20th century, with the construction of a steel mill. Despite the much potential which Bagnoli has, today it is one of the most discussed urban voids awaiting remediation and it has so many ecological issues in terms of soil and water contamination. ‘‘A New Lifescape for Bagnoli’’ is a study starting from the historical analysis of the site. As we embark on the development of this site, we would like to offer a glimpse of the many ways we can re-imagine this extraordinary open space. To paraphrase a famous playwright, an exit door is also the entrance into a new space, and this Master Plan is the sound of the exit door closing, leaving behind the Bagnoli of yesterday. This document is thus the first step into our new space, the beginning in how we can—and must—redefine, through Bagnoli, this area for ourselves and the next generations. It is an organic blueprint which shows the evolution of 20th-century blight on the landscape into a 21st-century “Lifescape.” We hope this Draft Master Plan will offer a vivid preview of that future.

Bagnoli è stato uno dei luoghi dell'industrializzazione di Napoli all'inizio del XX secolo, con la costruzione di un'acciaieria. Nonostante le grandi potenzialità di Bagnoli, oggi è uno dei vuoti urbani più discussi in attesa di risanamento e presenta molte problematiche ecologiche in termini di contaminazione del suolo e delle acque. ''A New Lifescape for Bagnoli'' è uno studio che parte dall'analisi storica del sito. Nell'intraprendere lo sviluppo di questo sito, vogliamo offrire un assaggio dei tanti modi in cui possiamo ri-immaginare questo straordinario spazio aperto. Per parafrasare un famoso drammaturgo, una porta d'uscita è anche l'ingresso in un nuovo spazio, e questo Master Plan è il suono della porta d'uscita che si chiude, lasciandosi alle spalle il Bagnoli di ieri. Questo documento è quindi il primo passo verso il nostro nuovo spazio, l'inizio di come possiamo - e dobbiamo - ridefinire, attraverso Bagnoli, questo spazio per noi stessi e per le prossime generazioni. È un progetto organico che mostra l'evoluzione della ruggine del XX secolo sul paesaggio in un "Lifescape" del XXI secolo. Ci auguriamo che questa bozza di Master Plan offra un'anteprima vivida di quel futuro.
