GGP. Genova green power. Rigenerazione adattiva di una ex centrale termo-elettrica a Genova attraverso l'applicazione di un approccio circolare a più livelli attuativi

Today more than ever, the built environment becomes a resource that can give a higher investment opportunity than building ex novo, since beyond the cost, the value which is often not considered is given by the context in which this asset is placed. The history associated to a building can offer the possibility of idealizing new scenarios which can reveal as catalysts of novelty and change. These assets must be evaluated from a different and innovative perspective that takes more into account the potential rather than the problems, often linked to the lack of public-private partnerships, essential to make a project feasible. These observations are investigated in the case study of requalification and re-functionalization of the Genoa thermoelectric power plant and in the motivations of the Genova Green Power project. Motivations which have been developed in the functional program, that complies with the circular economy criteria in its entirety, so that the disposed asset can be reintegrated in the production cycle, no more as a grey energy, but as a green energy, vital and supporter of a society ready to evolve. The features of the building and the complexities of the context in which it is located have led to the definition of the goals: the restoration of the connection between the district of Sampierdarena with the sea, the extension of the Lanterna park, through the implementation of a green lung, the reduction of land use, opting for a vertical expansion, as well as the enhancement and respect for the existing building. It was possible to define four main focuses, which has the objective, as well as initial point, the community and its needs. These are biodiversity, materials, water and energy, synergically linked together to enrich the entire community. In the project of reuse of the plant, nature and agriculture join in the plant itself. In this way the building gives back green areas to the entirety of the park. The ambition of the project was to achieve self-sufficiency, through the production of food thanks to the "Vertical farm", achieved with organic and controlled agriculture, connected mutually to aquaponics and greenhouses production. This space represents a unique opportunity to eat locally grown vegetables, and well links with the two other main functions present: co-living and co-working. By making choices of reversibility and of durability, the leitmotif of the project becomes the sustainability, unravelled in all its facets, environmental, technological, energetic. All this was possible thanks to the high energy efficiency and the production of renewable energy, the reuse of water, the incentivisation of biodiversity, the reuse of existing materials and the use of others created with secondary raw materials. Genoa Green Power offers its environments to the creation of a community, trying to encourage the sharing of spaces, experiences and costs, in order to create a place of aggregation that aims at mutual enrichment between people of different origin and cultures, becoming part of the history and uniqueness of the port and of Genoa.

Oggi più che mai, l’ambiente costruito diviene una risorsa che può dare una possibilità d’investimento superiore rispetto al costruire ex novo, poiché oltre al costo, il valore che spesso non si considera è quello dato dal contesto in cui questo è inserito. La storia che accompagna un edificio può offrire la possibilità di idealizzare nuovi scenari che possono rivelarsi catalizzatori di novità e cambiamento. Questi edifici vanno valutati in un’ottica differente e innovativa che tiene presente delle potenzialità più che delle difficoltà, spesso legate alla mancanza di collaborazioni tra pubblico e privato, fondamentali per un progetto maggiormente attuabile. Queste considerazioni si condensano nel caso studio di riqualificazione e rifunzionalizzazione della centrale termoelettrica di Genova e nelle motivazioni del progetto Genova Green Power. Motivazioni che sono state riportate nel programma funzionale, che rispetta i criteri dell’economia circolare in ogni suo aspetto, affinché il bene possa essere rivalutato e reinserito nel ciclo produttivo, non più di un’energia grigia, ma di un’energia verde, vitale e sostenitrice di una società pronta ad evolversi. Le caratteristiche dell’edificio e le complessità del contesto in cui è allocato hanno portato alla definizione degli obiettivi: la ricucitura del quartiere di Sampierdarena con il mare, l’estensione del parco della Lanterna, attraverso la realizzazione di un polmone verde, la riduzione di uso del suolo, optando per un'espansione in verticale, oltre alla valorizzazione e al rispetto del manufatto esistente. Si determinano così quattro principali focus, che hanno come fine ultimo, nonché punto di partenza, la comunità e le sue necessità. Questi sono la biodiversità, i materiali, l’acqua e l’energia, collegati sinergicamente tra loro per arricchire l’intera comunità. Nel progetto di recupero della centrale, la natura e l’agricoltura entrano a far parte della stessa centrale. In questa maniera l’edificio restituisce aree verdi alla totalità del parco. L’ambizione del progetto è stata quella di raggiungere l’autosufficienza, tramite la produzione di cibo grazie alla “Vertical farm”, per mezzo di un'agricoltura organica e controllata, connessa mutualmente alla produzione acquaponica e a quella delle serre del parco. Questo spazio rappresenta un'opportunità unica per mangiare verdure coltivate localmente, e ben si collega con le due altre principali funzioni presenti: co-living e co-working. Facendo scelte di reversibilità e allo stesso tempo di durabilità, il filo conduttore del progetto diventa la sostenibilità, sviscerata in ogni sua sfaccettatura, ambientale, tecnologica, energetica. Tutto ciò reso possibile grazie all’elevata efficienza energetica ed alla produzione di energia rinnovabile, al riuso dell’acqua, all’incentivazione della biodiversità, al riutilizzo di materiali esistenti e all’utilizzo di altri creati con materie prime seconde. Genova Green Power mette i suoi ambienti a disposizione per la creazione di una comunità, cercando di favorire la condivisione di spazi, esperienze e costi, per dar vita a un luogo di aggregazione che punta all’arricchimento reciproco fra persone di origine e culture differenti, diventando parte della storia e dell’unicità del porto e della città di Genova.
