Optical fiber production in Prysmian Group

The thesis has been structured to deliver a clear and concise understanding of the performed activities by the author of the thesis and the underlying knowledge which was crucial for the creation of the booklet, as it is the foundation of the thesis. The starting point of the overall analysis is the description of the problems that the Prysmian Group, supported by DXC Technology, is trying to resolve, namely the use of paper to store the information related to cable production, and the consequent issues such as data misalignment and lack of traceability. The next chapter of the thesis provides the solution for the problem, which has been found in the implementation of the latest technologies such as a tailored Manufacturing Execution System and new hand-held terminals, allowing to collect process data in real-time whilst minimizing human errors occurrences. The third chapter consists of the description of the production process in one of the biggest optical fiber cable manufacturing plants in Europe, located in Slatina, Romania. The aforementioned process lays out the basis for the booklet and is the reason such a booklet has been developed for the operators in the first place. As the manufacturing process has been the underlying focus of the deliverable, it will be exhaustively described, taking into account the point of view of the operators.

La tesi è stata strutturata al fine di fornire una rappresentazione chiara e concisa delle attività svolte dall'autore della tesi e delle conoscenze di cruciali per la creazione dell'opuscolo operativo, in quanto la base della tesi. Il punto di partenza dell'analisi è la descrizione dei problemi che il gruppo Prysmian, sta cercando di risolvere tramite il supporto di DXC Technology, ossia l'uso della carta per archiviare le informazioni relative alla produzione di cavi e i conseguenti limiti come il disallineamento dei dati e mancanza di tracciabilità. Il successivo capitolo della tesi chiarisce la soluzione che è stata sviluppata per sopperire al problema, coincidente con l’implementazione delle più recenti tecnologie quale un Manufacturing Execution System su misura e nuovi terminali portatili, che consentono di raccogliere i dati di processo in tempo reale minimizzando al contempo il verificarsi di errori umani. Il terzo capitolo consiste nella descrizione del processo produttivo in uno dei più grandi impianti di produzione di cavi in fibra ottica in Europa, con sede a Slatina, in Romania. Il suddetto processo pone le basi per l'opuscolo ed è la ragione per cui un tale fascicolo è stato sviluppato per gli operai. Poiché il processo produttivo è stato al centro del risultato finale, verrà descritto in modo esauriente, tenendo conto del punto di vista degli operai.
