Higher education dropout is a major policy concern around the world because of its consequences for the individual, institutions and society as a whole. To counter this issue, it is fundamental for higher education administrators to be aware of the reasons influencing students’ decision to prematurely depart from an institution rather than complete their studies, so as to implement effective strategies and educational programs that help students achieve their academic goals. The aim of this paper is first and foremost to shed light on the main causes of college students’ dropout, as identified by the existing body of literature concerning university dropout. Then, some of the interventions that higher education institutions adopt with the aim of reducing the dropout phenomenon will be evaluated in their effectiveness by means of a case studies analysis.
L’abbandono degli studi da parte degli studenti universitari è un motivo di preoccupazione globale a causa delle conseguenze che ha per l’individuo, le università e la società nel suo complesso. Per contrastare questo fenomeno, è fondamentale che gli amministratori dell’educazione universitaria prendano coscienza dei motivi che influenzano la decisione degli studenti di abbandonare i loro studi universitari, piuttosto che completarli, in modo da implementare strategie e programmi educativi che siano efficaci nell’aiutare gli studenti a raggiungere i propri obiettivi. L’obiettivo di questa tesi è prima di tutto fare luce sulle principali cause di abbandono universitario, identificate dal corpo di letteratura esistente su tale argomento. Successivamente, alcuni interventi che le università mettono in atto con lo scopo di ridurre il fenomeno dell’abbandono saranno valutati nella loro efficacia, analizzando alcuni casi di studio.
