Garden of cultures. A space of symbolical overlapping

In Milan, viale Monza and via Padova are known for the dense compresence of the numerous ethnic groups inhabiting the area. Here, a new, restless city replaces the historical, more deeply-rooted city, not complying with the traditional urban elements and rules. This condition is very emblematic of a reality persisting in many contemporary metropolis, as a response to a dynamic principle of continuous movement of people, cultures, goods. Unlike other situations presenting high rates of immigration, the neighborhood is neither an enclave belonging to a specific culture nor a territory disputed among the different groups; it is rather an environment where the diversity of cultures, languages, traditions and religions finds a simultaneous and vibrant expression, coming from the overlapping of colors, smells and tastes that cultures mutually exchange. The intention of the project is to restitute this symbiotic relationship away from the daily distraction to give it back its importance and gestural expressiveness. The project works on the the local market Crespi, a public space that has by now lost its meaning belonging purely to the milanese tradition, and reproposes its original function as a link to the experience of food as a cultural manifestation. The reflection is based on the direct relationship between culinary practices and the natural habitat they develop in and the endemic species they use. The project intentions give shape to a planetary garden, where the cultivation and co-existence of natural species symbolically represent the different cultures and their history of migration, through their origins and their global diffusion. The project is recognizable in the city as a punctual environment with an intensive natural concentration, an oasis in the homogeneous urban context. The Garden of Cultures has a fragile objective: retrieve the spontaneous diversity through element of singularity and celebrate harmony through elements of sharing. At the design level this implies the choice of plants that are specific of a group or a geographical area (as the date palm from Maghreb, the banana tree from Philippines, the mango tree from Perù) and of the genus of Citrus, whose cultivation is practiced in these cultures. The story of citrus is the most ancient and beautiful contamination story of humanity.

A Milano, l’area di viale Monza e via Padova è conosciuta per la densa compresenza di gruppi etnici che la abitano. Qui, alla città storica, più radicata, si sostituisce una città nuova, in continuo mutamento, che si discosta dagli elementi e dalle regole tradizionali. Questa condizione rappresenta il paradigma di una realtà che si propone in molte metropoli contemporanee, in risposta ad un principio dinamico di movimento continuo di persone, culture, merci. A differenza di altre situazioni che presentano alti tassi di immigrazione, il quartiere non è né un’enclave di una cultura specifica né un territorio conteso dai diversi gruppi presenti; è piuttosto un ambiente dove la diversità di culture, lingue, usi e religioni trova un’espressione simultanea ed effervescente, frutto della sovrapposizione di colori, profumi e sapori che le culture si danno in prestito. L’interesse progettuale è volto a strappare questo rapporto simbiotico alla distrazione quotidiana per restituirgli importanza e gestualità. Il progetto ripensa il mercato rionale Crespi, uno spazio pubblico ormai svuotato dalla cultura tradizionale puramente milanese, e ne raccoglie la vocazione originale per riproporre l’esperienza legata al cibo come manifestazione culturale. La riflessione si basa sul rapporto diretto che le pratiche culinarie hanno con l’habitat in cui si sviluppano e le specie vegetali endemiche utilizzate nelle preparazioni. La scelta progettuale è di dare vita ad un giardino planetario, dove la coltivazione e la coesistenza di specie vegetali rappresentano simbolicamente le diverse culture e la loro storia di migrazione, attraverso la loro provenienza e la successiva diffusione globale. Il progetto si riconosce nella città come un ambiente puntuale, ad alta concentrazione naturale, un’oasi nell’omogeneità del tessuto urbano. Il Giardino delle Culture ha un obiettivo fragile: recuperare la diversità spontanea attraverso elementi di singolarità e celebrare l’armonia attraverso elementi di condivisione. A livello progettuale questo si traduce nella scelta di essenze specifiche care ad un gruppo etnico ed area geografica (come la palma da dattero del Maghreb, il banano delle Filippine, il mango del Perù) e del genere degli agrumi, la cui coltivazione è invece diffusa in tutte le culture considerate. Quella degli agrumi è la più antica e bella storia di contaminazione dell’umanità.
