On-premises infrastructure e Cloud computing. Un'analisi di costi, rischi e benefici in ambito di PMI

This work started in a collaboration with Sinte S.R.L., a company operating in the information technology field, in which the author is working since four years as system administrator. The aim of this thesis is to study how the cloud computing solutions have impact on the current market system, in particular evaluating the costs, risks and benefits and comparing them with the on-premises solutions. Today's market, indeed, is moving towards this direction and the companies are more and more interested in considering whether this new approach can be advantageous. The study was performed on a sample of IT infrastructures from the clients of Sinte S.R.L. It will have start with an overview of the characteristics and the sizes of the companies considered. Later it will be shown a model, named TCO, useful in order to evaluate the costs of the whole IT infrastructure that the client has to take in account. Then it will be presented the current market status focusing the attention on the top cloud computing players. To this analysis it will be added a list of examples of applications which can well show the analogies with the cloud computing. These cases will show the comparison with both IaaS and SaaS solutions. In the first part, it will be treated the analysis of the request of instances and the one of bare metal. In the second part, two examples of application will be shown in order to elucidate the managing of the data and the e-mails on the cloud with SaaS solutions. Furthermore, it will be presented a case of study in which a company applied the decision to migrate data towards a on-premises solution. In conclusion of the thesis, it will be highlighted how Sinte S.R.L. is placing itself as a company on the front edge on this always developing world, giving the opportunity to offer strategical solutions based on the different scenario. It will be strongly stressed the advantage of adopting on-premises solutions in comparison with the services of cloud computing available, making in this way necessary the presence of a professional role which can manage the whole infrastructure in the companies.

Il presente elaborato nasce in collaborazione con Sinte S.R.L., azienda operante nel campo informatico nella quale lo scrivente ricopre da quattro anni la qualifica di sistemista. Il presente lavoro di Tesi nasce dalla necessità di studiare come le soluzioni di cloud computing abbiano impatto sull’attuale situazione di mercato, valutandone costi, rischi e benefici in contrapposizione alle soluzioni on-premises. Il mercato attuale sta, infatti, muovendosi molto verso questa direzione e le imprese sono sempre più interessate a valutare se questo nuovo modo di operare sia effettivamente vantaggioso. Lo studio è stato effettuato su un campione di infrastrutture informatiche delle aziende in gestione a Sinte S.R.L. Si procederà fornendo una panoramica delle caratteristiche e delle dimensioni delle aziende prese in analisi. Verrà poi mostrato un modello, denominato TCO, necessario al fine di calcolare i costi di proprietà dell’intera infrastruttura informatica in carico al cliente. A seguire si mosterà l’attuale situazione di mercato focalizzando l’attenzione sui top player del mondo cloud. A tale analisi, si provvederà ad integrare una serie di casi d’uso che ben rappresentano le analogie con il mondo cloud. I casi d’uso mostreranno il confronto sia con soluzioni IaaS che SaaS. Nel primo scenario si procederà ad analizzare sia le richieste di istanze che la richiesta di bare metal. Nel secondo scenario si procederà ad illustrare due differenti casi d’uso atti ad illustrare la gestione in cloud dei dati e della posta elettronica tramite soluzioni SaaS. Verrà, inoltre, illustrato un caso studio legato ad un’azienda che ha ritenuto conveniente migrare l’archiviazione dei dati verso una soluzione on-premises. A conclusione dell’elaborato, si osserverà come Sinte S.R.L si pone davanti a questo mondo sempre di più in via di espansione, proponendo una valutazione strategica sulla base dei differenti scenari operativi trattati, rimarcando come la soluzione on-premises vinca sulla soluzione proposta dalle companies di servizi di cloud computing, rendendo di fatto necessaria la presenza di una figura professionale che operi all’interno delle aziende, amministrando l’intera infrastruttura.
