Design proposal for a new Jewish museum in Prague

The main aim of the research is by implanting several architectural projects on the chosen sites near the river Vltava in order to create the river bank loop of the Prague city, for the purpose of completing the urban fabric and the obtaining of a continue image of the waterfront. The research of this work is based on understanding the identity and the possible improvement of the river’s sides connection of the Prague city. The various investigation and analysis made it possible to identify the main features of the two sides and has facilitated us to pose a design proposal for the chosen locations. The study was more focused on the Old Town, since it presented more possibilities for some design proposals. Following the investigation of the river’s sides through different analysis, the main identity of both sides of the river was evident. The Old Town of Prague presented a denser urban fabric, while the Castle side was characterized by its green areas. The research is divided in five parts: First, it tackles the urban development of Prague to better understand in a larger scale the evolution of the city and how the Prague of today is the results of the changes occurred during different periods of the past. The second part is a deep research regarding the Jewish culture of Prague, with a strong emphasis in the history of different Ghettos. The main context is the Old Town of Prague, and Josefov Jewish quarter. The third part is dedicated to the analysis on the urban level of the city, focusing more on understanding the possible design proposal’s locations through different analysis on the tourist itinerary and the main traffic. Then, we suggest a proposal for the improve connection of the two sides of the river Vltava. The fourth part describes the sources of our concepts that we adopted during the design process. Lastly, the fifth part is the design proposal which was the results of both the analysis of the context and the research done. All the materials of the project are shown in this chapter.

Lo scopo della ricerca è creare un ciclo nelle rive del fiume della città di Praga, in modalità di impostare alcuni progetti architettonici nei siti scelti vicino al fiume Moldava per il completamento del tessuto urbano e per ottenere un’immagine continua del waterfront in Citta Praga. La ricerca del lavoro si base nel comprendere l’identità e il possibile miglioramento della connessione dei lati del fiume della città di Praga. I vari indagini e analisi hanno reso possibile l’identificazione dei principali aspetti dei due lati e hanno facilitato la proposta di progetto nei siti scelti. Lo studio è principalmente focalizzato nella Città Vecchia, in quanto essa presenta una maggiore flessibilità e possibilità per le proposte di progetto. A seguito alle indagini riguardanti i lati del fiume attraversi diversi analisi, l’identità dei due lati era evidente. La Città Vecchia di Praga presentava un tessuto urbano più denso, mentre il lato del Castello era caratterizzato the più aree verdi. La ricerca può essere suddivisa in cinque parti: La prima parte riguarda lo sviluppo urbano di Praga necessaria per comprendere meglio in una scala più ampia l’evoluzione della città e come Praga di oggi sia il risultato dei cambiamenti avvenuti duranti i diversi periodi del passato. La seconda parte è una ricerca profonda riguardante la cultura ebraica di Praga, con un particolare enfasi nella storia dei diversi ghetto. L’analisi si focalizza nella Città Vecchia di Praga e il quartiere ebraico di Josefov. La terza parte è dedicata alle analisi a livello urbano della città, focalizzandoci al comprendere le possibili proposte di progetto nei siti scelti attraverso le analisi degli itinerari turistici e il traffico urbano. Dopo questo, abbiamo delineato una proposta per il miglioramento della connessione dei due lati del fiume Moldava. La quarta parte descrive le origini e le fonti dei concetti adottati durante il processo progettuale. Infine, la quinta parte è la proposta progettuale che è il risultato sia delle analisi del contesto che della ricerca fatta. Tutti i materiali del progetto sono presentati in questo capitolo.
