Lean office : a case study in STM

The report presents an analysis on the management of a manufacturing transfer procedure in STMicroelectronics using lean methodologies to understand the activities, their problems, and propose solutions that would improve the process’ current situation. STMicroelectronics is one of the largest companies dedicated to the manufacturing of semiconductor technologies. The process that will be treated is the transferal of the Electronic Wafer Sorting (EWS or wafer testing) from one plant to another, the focus is to be held on the managerial and administrative activities rather than in the manufacturing ones. The main frameworks to assess the project is the A3 format, which standardizes the thinking process and allows to systematically be able to implement lean solutions. The study allowed to comprehend the process present situation by means of drawing a VSM, it also allowed to find the causes of delays and propose countermeasures that have an impact on the process’ Lead Time. Furthermore, results show that there is an interest of the company to continue with the continuous improvement momentum by assessing other problematic processes.

Il rapporto presenta un'analisi sulla gestione di una procedura di trasferimento di produzione in STMicroelectronics utilizzando metodologie lean per comprendere le attività, i loro problemi e proporre soluzioni che migliorerebbero l'attuale situazione del processo. La STMicroelectronics è una delle più grandi aziende dedicate alla produzione di tecnologie a semiconduttore. Il processo che verrà trattato è il trasferimento dell'ordinamento elettronico dei wafer (EWS o test dei wafer) da un impianto all'altro, l'attenzione deve essere concentrata sulle attività gestionali e amministrative piuttosto che su quelle manifatturiere. Il framework principale per valutare il progetto è il formato A3, che standardizza il processo di pensiero e permette di essere sistematicamente in grado di implementare soluzioni. Lo studio ha permesso di comprendere la situazione attuale del processo mediante il disegno di un VSM, ha anche permesso di trovare le cause dei ritardi e di proporre contromisure che hanno un impatto sul Lead Time del processo. Inoltre, i risultati mostrano che c'è un interesse dell'azienda a continuare con lo slancio del miglioramento continuo valutando altri processi problematici.
