Bobbio. A journey between history and nature

Bobbio, a medieval village, whose history is strongly related by Irish missionary St. Columbanus, used to be among the most important and principal center of religious culture in medieval Italy and Europe. Surrounded by magnificent landscape, hugged by mountains and the calm beauty of Trebbia river, being a strategic connection point between Northern Italy and Liguria, Bobbio carries on its stones a history from stone age until now days and like this became an attraction point for visitors and won the title of “Borgo dei Borghi’ 2020. Now days, even though the village still has the old town that is very good preserved and has a great potential, the importance that Bobbio once had has quite faded. The initial question and the focus of our thesis project is: How can we, starting from the contemporary situation emphasize the main historical monuments and local memory by recalling the history. Hence, we identified two critical points as priorities for our intervention and tried to turn and translate them into future potential points for the development of slow tourism. The first point treats the relationship between the village and the river around the Ponte Gobbo Bridge while the second point treats the relationship of village and its landscape on the other side. All the experience is a continues vibrant path and along it goes a story which stops and emphasizes different sequences of the village and landscape. The journey begins in the old town square, which at the same time is considered as a heart, and while the heart beats its rhythm corresponds to the ups and downs of our design. Following the narrow medieval streets, visitors reach the famous ancient arched bridge of Ponte Gobbo. This segment treats different elements such as the intersection between motor road and pedestrians path, the accessibility to the river and the morphology and flood prevention around the river area, while the design aims to provide different facilities, equipment’s and recovering the landscape for the riverbank, various paths and viewpoints to experience the village and the surrounding. The walk continues towards Ponte Gobbo bridge and brings the visitors to the other side of Trebbia , which at the same time is the second points of intervention that tries to create a qualitative relation between village and its landscape. Following and climbing the new path, visitors can experience different moments of the landscape, as along it three stopping are designed. As the narration of our design reaches the highest point of the area, they can actually frame all the surrounding and create their own story about the famous medieval village.Along these lines our design philosophy aims to emphasize the history and create a strong relation between the old village and its landscape and at the same time promote and develop the slow tourism so Bobbio can be again a target point to visit.

Bobbio, un borgo medievale, la cui storia è fortemente legata dal missionario irlandese San Colombano, era tra i più importanti e principali centri di cultura religiosa dell'Italia medievale e dell'Europa. Circondato da un magnifico paesaggio, abbracciato dalle montagne e dalla tranquilla bellezza del fiume Trebbia, punto di collegamento strategico tra il Nord Italia e la Liguria, Bobbio porta sulle sue pietre una storia dall'età della pietra fino ai giorni nostri e così è diventato un punto di attrazione per i visitatori e ha vinto il titolo di “Borgo dei Borghi '2020. Al giorno d'oggi, anche se il borgo ha ancora il centro storico molto ben conservato e dalle grandi potenzialità, l'importanza che aveva un tempo Bobbio è del tutto svanita. La domanda iniziale e il fulcro del nostro progetto di tesi è: come possiamo, partendo dalla situazione contemporanea, enfatizzare i principali monumenti storici e la memoria locale richiamandone la storia. Abbiamo quindi individuato due punti critici come prioritari per il nostro intervento e abbiamo cercato di trasformarli e tradurli in futuri potenziali punti per lo sviluppo del turismo slow. Il primo punto tratta il rapporto tra il villaggio e il fiume attorno al Ponte Gobbo, mentre il secondo punto tratta il rapporto del villaggio e del suo paesaggio dall'altra parte. Tutta l'esperienza è un percorso continuo e vibrante e lungo di esso va una storia che si ferma e sottolinea diverse sequenze del villaggio e del paesaggio. Il viaggio inizia nella piazza della città vecchia, che allo stesso tempo è considerata come un cuore, e mentre il cuore batte il suo ritmo corrisponde agli alti e bassi del nostro progetto. Seguendo le strette vie medievali, i visitatori raggiungono il famoso antico ponte ad arco di Ponte Gobbo. Questo segmento tratta diversi elementi come l'intersezione tra strada a motore e percorso pedonale, l'accessibilità al fiume e la morfologia e prevenzione delle alluvioni intorno all'area fluviale, mentre il progetto mira a fornire diverse strutture, attrezzature e recupero del paesaggio per la riva del fiume, vari sentieri e punti panoramici per vivere il borgo e l'ambiente circostante. La passeggiata prosegue verso Ponte Gobbo e porta i visitatori sull'altro versante della Trebbia, che allo stesso tempo è il secondo punto di intervento che cerca di creare un rapporto qualitativo tra il borgo e il suo paesaggio. Seguendo e salendo il nuovo percorso, i visitatori possono vivere diversi momenti del paesaggio, in quanto lungo di esso vengono progettate tre soste. Poiché la narrazione del nostro progetto raggiunge il punto più alto dell'area, possono effettivamente inquadrare tutto l'ambiente circostante e creare la propria storia sul famoso borgo medievale.Su queste linee la nostra filosofia progettuale mira a sottolineare la storia e creare un forte legame tra il borgo antico e il suo paesaggio e allo stesso tempo promuovere e sviluppare il turismo slow affinché Bobbio possa tornare ad essere un punto di arrivo da visitare.
