The building sector accounts for 40% of the world’s energy consumption and around 30% of the Greenhouse Gases emissions. Reducing the energy consumption of buildings, while optimizing the comfort of user’s inside, is therefore more than ever a key issue for engineers and architects. This thesis will explore how the shift from static facades to adaptive building skins might be a possible answer to this environmental challenge. Focusing more specifically on solar adaptation, it will explore the combination of curved crease‐based shading devices with SMA‐wire actuators. The efficiency of the proposed concepts will be assessed with daylight and energy simulations and results will be analyzed and discussed.

Abstract
The building sector accounts for 40% of the world’s energy consumption and around 30% of the Greenhouse Gases emissions. Reducing the energy consumption of buildings, while optimizing the comfort of user’s inside, is therefore more than ever a key issue for engineers and architects. This thesis will explore how the shift from static facades to adaptive building skins might be a possible answer to this environmental challenge. Focusing more specifically on solar adaptation, it will explore the combination of curved crease‐based shading devices with SMA‐wire actuators. The efficiency of the proposed concepts will be assessed with daylight and energy simulations and results will be analyzed and discussed.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
