During my study period in Jerusalem, the Technical Office of the Custody of the Holy Land, which deals with the management and maintenance of all the buildings of the Franciscan friars in this region, understood the need to intervene on the Dominus Flevit Shrine. This sacred place, located on the slopes of the Mount of Olives, recalls the evangelical event in which Jesus weeps looking at the city of Jerusalem and foretelling its future destruction (Lk 19, 41-44). The view over the Old City of Jerusalem makes this spot unique for both tourists and pilgrims who arrive by the thousands every day. The Technical Office has realized that the absence of a unified vision of the place has led, in recent decades, to disordered interventions and unsuitable for the function that the sacred place requires. Furthermore, even the precious presence of archaeological remains is not shown to visitors in the best way, with, in some cases, serious risks for its conservation. The notoriety of this Shrine and its spiritual importance in the city of Jerusalem have made an immediate project intervention that can keep together the spiritual and cultural needs of the place through a single clear, simple and understandable language by all the variety of peoples that every year visits him. This was therefore the guideline that led me, at the request of the Technical Office, to draw up the thesis project through a design masterplan, capable of gathering all the problems and needs of the current state and developing new ideas for intervention. The work began with a careful analysis of the place and the multiform religious presence that lives on the slopes of the mountain, through a study on the spot directed and followed by Professor Nilly Harag of the Bezalel University of Jerusalem. The heart of the thesis, on the other hand, that is the understanding of the needs of the Sanctuary, was born and developed from the frequent visit of the place during the various months of stay in the Holy City. Certainly the discussion with some Franciscan friars was fundamental and in particular with Father Eugenio Alliata, director of the archaeological and multimedia section of the Terra Sancta Museum. The project masterplan was therefore drawn up starting from the analysis of the numerous information collected in situ, always following the cardinal request of the Custody of the Holy Land: to make this Sanctuary a true place of conversion and prayer for pilgrims from all over the world through the beauty of the architecture and natural landscape of the Mount of Olives.
