The aim of this thesis dissertation is to investigate the place of memory in the field of Design Product, and to propose some specific aspects of memory as innovative themes to follow during the conception and development of a product. More specifically, the investigation will concern the field of Speculative Design, along with Experimental Design, under the framework of Future Studies. In its first part, the dissertation will work as a theoretical introduction to the aforementioned fields of studies, explaining their essence and how they can be interwoven with each other. After which, the topic of memory will be covered in order to learn not only about its components, but also its place in the current society, a sort of context. Through this memory chapter, an investigation will be led to get to understand why is memory an important thematic for creatives to put their interest in, as well as a potential future stakeholder in terms of design, an what are the boundaries of memory when it comes to its representation, how it’s understood and how it’s objectified. The second part of the dissertation is a phenomenologically led investigation on different case studies of products and art installations, all on the theme of memory. The goal of such research is to classify the case study, effectively creating four different axes of memory exploitation that will be the themes highlighted by this dissertation. These themes will be the ones deemed potential-holders for designers to invest in during the creation phase. Lastly, the third part will be the conclusion of this research dissertation, shaped as a critical writing rather than a design proposal. The final goal being, along with the identification and suggestion of the exploitable trends, to know how to merge product and memory, with tools for the experimental and/or speculative product to find its place in the current society.
