Ad portas. Center for the promotion and development of enogastronomic culture and sustainable tourism of Rivoli Veronese

Ad-portas is based on the premise of adaptive reuse, recycling, restoring and enhancement of abandoned buildings that have historical and architectural values. Identifying real problems, the project is proposed as a sort of manifesto towards a future that rescues an architecture lost in time, in order to reverse the cycle of deterioration of abandoned buildings. In order to create a sustainable architecture that respects the essence of the building which makes it possibile to intervene with attention in the dialogue between “new” and “old” respecting the historical context, revitalise an area that is currently undervalued. This will contribute to the local communities and to the socio-economic engine creating a landmark in the landscape that promotes sustainable tourism in the area. In this thesis the focus lies on the rehabilitation of a military fortress from the 19th century in Rivoli Veronese, at the foot of Monte Baldo. It is an intervention strategy for the future of military architecture, which will grant tourist and economic support to the local communities. It will trigger the definition and creation of boundaries in the territory at a local and regional level. For the redevelopment of the fortress a cultural center is proposed which mainly focuses on education, commerce, tourism and offering public spaces. These functions arise from the main strategy of the project, which is to develop the enogastronomic culture of Rivoli Veronese. This will create the opportunity to increase the local economy and maintain the traditions of the surrounding communities. Within the center theoretical and practical workshops will be organised on this subject while keeping a respectful and mindful association to the history of the building. As the fortress is partially destroyed, and kept in that same state for many decades, the project aims at reinterpreting the heritage with its historical architectural typologies in mind. This way, a link is created between the project and the people who inhabit it, relating the population to its historical context through the daily life of its traditions.

Ad-portas si basa sulla premessa del riutilizzo adattivo, riciclaggio, restauro e valorizzazione di edifici abbandonati che hanno valori storici e architettonici. Individuando problemi reali, il progetto si propone come una sorta di manifesto verso un futuro che recupera un'architettura persa nel tempo, al fine di invertire il ciclo di degrado degli edifici abbandonati. Per creare un'architettura sostenibile che rispetti l'essenza dell'edificio che permetta di intervenire con attenzione nel dialogo tra “nuovo” e “vecchio” rispettando il contesto storico, rivitalizzare un'area attualmente sottovalutata. Ciò contribuirà alle comunità locali e al motore socio-economico creando un punto di riferimento nel paesaggio che promuove il turismo sostenibile nell'area. In questa tesi l'attenzione si concentra sulla riabilitazione di una fortezza militare del XIX secolo a Rivoli Veronese, ai piedi del Monte Baldo. Si tratta di una strategia di intervento per il futuro dell'architettura militare, che garantirà sostegno turistico ed economico alle comunità locali. Innescherà la definizione e la creazione di confini nel territorio a livello locale e regionale. Per la riqualificazione della fortezza si propone un centro culturale che si concentra principalmente su istruzione, commercio, turismo e offerta di spazi pubblici. Queste funzioni derivano dalla strategia principale del progetto, che è quella di sviluppare la cultura enogastronomica di Rivoli Veronese. Ciò creerà l'opportunità di aumentare l'economia locale e mantenere le tradizioni delle comunità circostanti. All'interno del centro verranno organizzati seminari teorici e pratici su questo argomento mantenendo un rispettoso e consapevole legame con la storia dell'edificio. Poiché la fortezza è parzialmente distrutta e mantenuta nello stesso stato per molti decenni, il progetto mira a reinterpretare il patrimonio con le sue tipologie architettoniche storiche in mente. In questo modo si crea un legame tra il progetto e le persone che lo abitano, mettendo in relazione la popolazione con il suo contesto storico attraverso la vita quotidiana delle sue tradizioni.
