Architecture as a tool for transformation : participatory approaches in contemporary architecture

This research presents a description of the role of the architecture and the role of the people that inhabit it, and the relationship between the two. The role of architecture had been losing its social relevance and credibility, becoming, for the most part, individualist and capitalist-driven. However, in recent years, it has been evolving gradually into a more socially concerned practice, in a process that can be described as a change of mentality in architecture. Simultaneously, the role of the people in the shaping of cities has become too important to ignore. The rapid rate of urbanization and their power of self-construction have put in evidence that a new approach and methods in the architectural practice are necessary. Participatory architecture, the focal point of this paper, is where both roles come together. The history of participation in architecture and the roots of the concept are analyzed through literary research. Furthermore, the study of cases from different parts of the world but based on the same participatory philosophy, helps to give a comprehensive view of the social impact and transformational power this approach to architecture can have.

Questa ricerca presenta una descrizione del ruolo dell'architettura e del ruolo delle persone che la abitano e del rapporto tra i due. Il ruolo dell'architettura aveva perso la sua rilevanza sociale e credibilità, diventando, per la maggior parte, individualista e guidato dal capitalismo. Tuttavia, negli ultimi anni, si è evoluta gradualmente in una pratica più socialmente interessata, in un processo che può essere descritto come un cambiamento di mentalità in architettura. Allo stesso tempo, il ruolo delle persone nella formazione delle città è diventato troppo importante per essere ignorato. Il rapido tasso di urbanizzazione e il loro potere di autocostruzione hanno messo in evidenza che sono necessari un nuovo approccio e metodi nella pratica architettonica. L'architettura partecipata, il punto focale di questo testo, è il punto in cui entrambi i ruoli si uniscono. La storia della partecipazione all'architettura e le radici del concetto vengono analizzate attraverso la ricerca letteraria. Inoltre, lo studio di casi provenienti da diverse parti del mondo ma basati sulla stessa filosofia partecipativa, aiuta a dare una visione completa dell'impatto sociale e del potere di trasformazione che questo approccio all'architettura può avere.
