Service design for cultural heritage. The contribution of service design in bridging tradition and innovation to enhance and activate local handicraft of the Marche region

In a historical moment where we are witnessing an economy of consumption and overproduction, we are living a cultural flattening and the territories with a low industrial vocation and strong artisan roots, such as those of central and southern Italy, have entered a crisis. Over the years and requiring new areas of development, they have gradually abandoned that identarian cultural matrix of the territory: the handicraft. The research arises from the analysis of the Italian and Marche region context, where work as a know-how and local artisan production represent pillars of its identity in the world but risk being forgotten. Only recently, thanks to the use of new technologies and digital innovation, craftsmanship is experiencing a renaissance, but it is still limited to a niche and in a system still too closed. The Product-Service System Design, in addition to the strategic and communication competences, has a significant impact in the processes of the development of the territory through the Cultural Heritage enhancement. This research will investigate how the Design, with a human-centered approach, can enhance and activate this territorial cultural heritage creating a dialogue between tradition and innovation. The Sape’ fa’ project aims to open the use of handicraft knowledge to new generations, to reactivate their interest and allow a contemporary use to feed local development and cultural, social and economic growth.

In un momento storico in cui stiamo assistendo ad un’economia di consumo e sovrapproduzione, stiamo vivendo un appiattimento culturale e i territori a bassa vocazione industriale e forti radici artigiane, come quelli del centro e sud Italia, sono entrati in crisi. Nel corso degli anni e richiedendo nuove aree di sviluppo, gli stessi territori hanno progressivamente abbandonato quella matrice culturale identitaria del territorio: l’artigianato. La ricerca nasce dall’analisi del contesto italiano e marchigiano, dove il lavoro come saper fare e la produzione artigianale locale rappresentano i pilastri della sua identità nel mondo ma rischiano di essere dimenticati. Solo recentemente, grazie all’utilizzo delle nuove tecnologie e all’innovazione digitale, l’artigianato sta vivendo una rinascita, ma è ancora circoscritto ad una nicchia e in un sistema ancora troppo chiuso. Il Design del Sistema Prodotto-Servizio, oltre alle competenze strategiche e di comunicazione, ha un impatto significativo nei processi di sviluppo del territorio attraverso la valorizzazione dei Beni Culturali. Questa ricerca indagherà come il Design, con un approccio human-centered, possa valorizzare e attivare questo patrimonio culturale territoriale creando un dialogo tra tradizione e innovazione. Il progetto Sape ’fa’ si propone di aprire l’utilizzo del sapere artigianale alle nuove generazioni, riattivare in loro l’interesse e consentirne un utilizzo contemporaneo per alimentare lo sviluppo locale e la crescita culturale, sociale ed economica.
