Ingegneria e progettazione del dirigibile : analisi storica e prospettive future

This master thesis concerns airships. Five historical periods have been identified, coming back to the first airship dated around the end of the 19th Century. Some of these ages, such as the one ending with the second World War, have definite time boundaries; others, for example in the 90s when there was a decline in interest in this vehicle, have more nuanced boundaries, and their identification can be considered arbitrary. This subdivision is based on the attention from the aeronautical world, present or absent, towards airships. For each chronological stage, a historical, technical, technological and economic analysis was carried out in order to identify the topics being researched, in the areas of aerodynamics, dynamics and control, structures, systems and conceptual design. The result of this analysis is enclosed in the final chapter: hypotheses and conjectures were formulated on the future of the airship, on its possible applications, the existing criticalities and the areas in which research can be useful in making the design and construction of future airships, simpler and more accurate.

Il presente lavoro di tesi riguarda il dirigibile. Sono stati individuati cinque periodi storici, a partire dal primo dirigibile risalente alla fine dell’800. Alcuni di questi, quale ad esempio il periodo terminante con la Seconda guerra mondiale, ha confini temporali netti; altri, come quello riguardante gli anni 90 con il calo d’interesse nel velivolo, sono più sfumati, e la loro individuazione può ritenersi arbitraria. Questa suddivisione si basa sull’attenzione, da parte del modo aeronautico, ora presente, ora assente, nei riguardi del dirigibile. Per ciascun periodo storico, si è svolta un’analisi storica, tecnica, tecnologica ed economica, onde individuare i temi oggetto di ricerca, negli ambiti dell’aerodinamica, della dinamica e controllo, delle strutture, degli impianti e della progettazione concettuale. Frutto di quest’analisi è il capitolo finale, nel quale si sono formulate ipotesi e congetture sul futuro del dirigibile, sulle sue possibili applicazioni, le criticità esistenti e gli ambiti nei quali la ricerca può trovare applicazione nel rendere la progettazione e la realizzazione dei dirigibili del futuro, più semplice e accurata.
