Therefore, emotion regulation is becoming more and more important in people’s daily life. Research revealed that exposure to nature has a positive impact on the human mind, which is considered as a way to achieve relaxation experience. Therefore, a few experimental products have appeared that apply nature views in virtual reality, showing the potential of using this kind of technology to facilitate a relaxation process. In this context, this thesis project aims to create an immersive relaxation experience in virtual reality that make use of surreal nature art. Specifically, it investigates if there is potential to achieve an alternative relaxation experience in a virtual environment with the use of specific audio-visual design that can be applied in daily contexts. To reach the goal of providing such an experience, the use of surreal nature elements is defined as a way of communication and virtual reality is defined as a technology carrier. The research expanded the topic from the perspectives of relaxation feelings, immersion, multi-sensory design, and surreal art. To discover the factors which have a significant impact on relaxation experience in nature, an online survey was distributed to random participants - regardless of gender, age, and residence - to reveal people’s feelings, preferences, and thoughts of relaxing in nature. After collecting 176 valid questionnaire data from an online quantitative survey, there followed the in-depth qualitative structured interview of 10 participants with responding to specific questions according to the data from the quantitative survey. The main results showed that natural scenery with water, green plants, sun and stars are highly favourable; and that walking, sitting, and lying down are the most favourable status while relaxing in nature. By analysing the result from the user survey, it brought the insight for the preliminary concept design from the personas and user journey distilled from user data. The concept design indicated the creation of six surreal scenes in virtual reality which used the nature elements of stars, trees, clouds, sun, water and snow. A final design solution was defined and developed to validate the research objectives. TreeE was the final solution developed as a mobile virtual reality application that provides users a surreal immersive virtual scene for various relaxation feelings which can be viewed through cardboard VR goggles. The project was developed with three different tree views that each of them could produce different relaxation related experience with its audio-visual design implementation. The study demonstrated the design refinement and detailed design process of each involved element includes visual presentation, 3d soundscape design, and interaction design from both design and development perspectives. The final prototype testing was distributed to various participants for validating the features and user experiences. User testing was conducted in both on-site and remote ways which all followed a test guideline that was equipped with the installed mobile application, cardboard VR goggles, and earphones. There was also an in-depth interview with each participant to collect user experiences data and other feedback from perspectives of relaxing feeling, immersive audio-visual design, and interaction. The testing results showed a strong connection between this multi-sensory immersive virtual environment with surreal nature and the generation of relaxed feelings that research projects can be considered as an alternative for relaxation experience with the potential. To respect the research objectives, the arguments are expanded and discussed mainly across the points: the user perception of the relaxing environment; the immersion in the virtual scene; the implementation quality of dynamic visualisation and immersive soundscape; the expediency of interaction design; the possible iteration in the future work. We conclude that there is the potential of feeling relaxed and generating positive emotion with surreal natural art in virtual reality. The number of testing participants is limited as a result of distance constraints and the availability of VR goggles in the testing process limits the generalisability of the results. However, the overall approach still provides the new sights of relaxation alternatives which are aligned with the research goal. This program has the potential to be developed in-depth with a higher fidelity audiovisual presentation, more developed features, and optimised interaction design. There will be more impressive artistic expressions in the virtual environment for positive emotional experiences. To better understand the implications of these values, future studies could address how to build a stronger bond between users and immersive products. With the future development of virtual reality technology and design improvement. It has promoted that there is the significance of the creation of this kind of experience for people's lives. It is expected that this design can exert its value and create well-being and inspiration in human life.
