Frankfurt am Main. An urban reorganization project for the Osthafen area

The thesis project in Frankfurt originated during the study course of the Laboratory Thematic Studio in Architecture and Urban Design held by Prof. Michele Giovanni Caja and our tutor Sotirios Zaroulas who followed us from the first months throughout the course design.It is proposed as a path in urban and architectural reorganization. Starting from the analysis of the evolution of urban morphology through the history of the city of Frankfurt and the mutation in the years of the urban fabric and neighborhoods. The project area is the Osthafen, Port of Frankfurt East, characteristic for its commercial function and its artificial conformation composed by two branches of water (northern and southern) that settle within the district creating a peninsula. The central theme is to develop in the Osthafen district an architecture dedicated to services and leisure spaces on the water in the northern basin, maintaining its port identity in the southern basin area. The development of the project starts from the urban scale arriving at the architectural one with the design of the Open Theater District. The reorganization of the urban conformation of the Osthafen was based on the composition of alignments as for the construction of the Teresiano district in Trieste, placing the Open Theater at the peak of the northern basin which will be the generator of new functions and new life in the neighborhood. Il progetto di tesi a Francoforte ha avuto origine durante il corso di studio del Laboratorio Thematic Studio in Architecture and Urban Design tenuto dal Prof. Michele Giovanni Caja e il nostro tutor Sotirios Zaroulas il quale ci ha seguito fin dai primi mesi in tutto il percorso progettuale. Si propone come percorso nella riorganizzazione urbana e architettonica. Partendo dall’analisi dell’evoluzione della morfologia urbana attraverso la storia della città di Francoforte e la mutazione negli anni del tessuto urbano e dei quartieri. L’area di progetto è l’Osthafen, Porto di Francoforte Est, caratteristico per la sua funzione commerciale e per la sua conformazione artificiale composta da due rami d’acqua (settentrionale e meridionale) che si insediano all’interno del quartiere creando una penisola. Il tema centrale è sviluppare nel quartiere dell’Osthafen un’architettura dedicata ai servizi e a spazi per il tempo libero sull’acqua nel bacino settentrionale mantenendo la sua identità portuale nella zona del bacino meridionale.Lo sviluppo del progetto parte dalla scala urbana arrivando a quella architettonica con il progetto dell’ Open Theater District.La riorganizzazione della conformazione urbana dell’Osthafen si è basata sulla composizione di allineamenti come per la costruzione del quartiere Teresiano a Trieste, ponendo l’Open Theater all’apice del bacino settentrionale il quale sarà generatore di nuove funzioni e nuova vita nel quartiere. Un passaggio attraverso la storia della città di Francoforte e i suoi quartieri.
