Discussing the contents of this research from water is, first and foremost, a methodological choice. By shifting the field of discourse from the geographical place, the design of architecture and the notion of landscape can be discussed from another place. Water constitutes a theoretical and also practical tool of argumentation of the site where the research project is located. A village in the province of Fujian, just a few kilometres from the Pacific Ocean and belonging to the Sancha River, is the setting in which the research unfolds, tackling the problem of abandoning rural contexts. Contexts need to be discussed through their use and, their recent decay. In China, the emptying of the countryside to migrate towards large metropolises is a phenomenon of which the six abandoned buildings in question are intended to be singular devices of broader argumentation. The methodology applied will be the instrument of communication and definition of the dialogical distance of the two areas. By bringing the Western point of view closer to Eastern thought, the notion of landscape is therefore discussed again within the dialogical distance that exists between the two contexts. It is a question of speaking and unfolding a distance, the one between two ways of understanding the landscape and its role in the construction of the territory. The space that is determined will include the contingent principles necessary for the definition of a possible project that can, simultaneously, indicate an approach to architecture and to space modification in general. Hypothesis and thesis belong to the design process, and the aim is to demonstrate how the architectural project is an instrument of reading and writing, a spherical space ever available to the place. The place is here understood as physical and abstract space, external and internal, as perceptual space and descriptive space. Discussing the landscape, we discuss the project and the importance that this pair has in the modification of the space we live in.

The shapes of water. A discourse around the architectural project for a landscape reactivation in Fujian Province

Abstract

Its opposite, solid matter determines neutral field or volume without quality, the shape of water. The relationship between container and content becomes, not only a real technical problem but also an abstract theoretical question. The vital link between water and soil will be argued as a real place of design and also as an instrumental place of theoretical discussion, feeding each other.
