Bio Bio river landscape. Shaping the riverfront corridors

The Bío Bío River is one of the biggest and most important water features of Chile and the region. The relationship with the city of Concepcion has always been critical. The citizens recognise the character and natural presence of the river and its always been in the collective imaginary. Due to the urban transformation that went through during the last years the city has been divided from the river. Infrastructure has been built and the river has been forgotten behind the boundaries. The citizens have always experienced the city through a high-speed layer from a back-seat position. This project is trying to revitalize the riverfront area and give the citizens the opportunity to evoke the river and experience it from a new scale through a sequence of corridors that connect to the city network and with the whole Metropolitan Area. Along the whole riverfront area different spaces are design to enhance the character and natural landscape and to provide new public spaces for the community while they are connected through the set of blue, green, and slow corridors. The blue corridor is set by the river, the green corridor is set by the natural landscape and the slow corridor acts as a mobility layer for different types of slow personal transport system ( bikes, skates, scooters, etc.) The three of them work as a system that shapes the riverfront area compressing and dilating between the city and the water.

Il fiume Bío Bío è uno dei più grandi e importanti del Cile e della regione. Il rapporto con la città di Concepcion è sempre stato critico. I cittadini riconoscono il carattere e la presenza naturale del fiume ed è sempre stato nell’immaginario collettivo. A causa della trasformazione urbanistica avvenuta negli ultimi anni la città è stata divisa dal fiume. Le infrastrutture sono state costruite e il fiume è stato dimenticato dietro i confini. I cittadini hanno sempre vissuto la città attraverso un livello ad alta velocità da una posizione di sedile posteriore. Questo progetto sta cercando di rivitalizzare l’area del lungofiume e dare ai cittadini l’opportunità di evocare il fiume e viverlo secondo una nuova scala attraverso una sequenza di corridoi che si collegano alla rete cittadina e con l’intera Area Metropolitana. Lungo l’intera area del lungofiume, diversi spazi sono progettati per migliorare il carattere e il paesaggio naturale e per fornire nuovi spazi pubblici per la comunità mentre sono collegati attraverso l’insieme di corridoi blu, verdi e lenti. Il corridoio blu è impostato dal fiume, il corridoio verde è impostato dal paesaggio naturale e il corridoio lento funge da strato di mobilità per diversi tipi di sistemi di trasporto lento personale (biciclette, pattini, scooter, ecc.) I tre lavorano come un sistema che modella l’area del lungofiume comprimendosi e dilatandosi tra la città e l’acqua.
