Abstract

Several school buildings were realized, in Milan and in North of Italy, in the decade from 1960 to 1970 in order to face the significant population increase which mark the historical period called “the economic boom years”. The buildings, made of construction steel, could be realized rapidly thanks to the application of the early concepts of prefabrication and construction modularity which distinguished the works of the FEAL company. The structural typology which is observed in all the schools of interest has been analysed according to modern codes in force nowadays, having a particular regard on the seismic problem. The check is accomplished by performing a linear response spectrum analysis and a non-linear pushover analysis and accounting for all the possible conservative assumptions. What is observed by the study of the Via Pizzigoni school is that the structure does not show significant risk, despite its original design did not probably account for seismic actions. Nevertheless, some expedient can be adopted to reduce the rotational effects that arise in the structure and that would be sufficient to significantly reduce any risk. This can be realized by rethinking the in-plan distribution of stiffness.
