A framework for manufacturing SMEs to support the transition to CE

The aim of this thesis is to create a framework to help the small and medium enterprises that are willing to shift to circular economy. To achieve this objective the authors have performed a narrative and a systematic literature review on different topic. The first step was to gain knowledge about the circular economy, and to combine it with the peculiarities of the supply chain actors within the context of manufacturing sector. What came to light was that after the industrial revolution manufacturers started to become a threat to the environment because their only concern was to satisfy the global demand neglecting the negative externalities on it. It was understood that the only way to face the problem was a shift to sustainable manufacturing. To make the change, big players are not enough, especially in Italy, since they stand for less than 10% of the overall businesses. Therefore, it was decided to focus on the small and medium enterprises. Despite they have to face many challenges to become circular, there is still no evidence about a framework that can support them in the transition. This is what brought the authors to design a new one to ease the process. In particular, this is built on two core instruments: a maturity model, validated on real cases, and a roadmap of proposals. To implement green practices specific technologies are needed to gather data, and a set of indicators necessary to monitor the performances. The maturity model and proposals combined allow companies to create self-awareness about their level of circularity and then to take concrete actions according to the role on the supply chain.

Lo scopo di questa tesi è di creare un framework per aiutare le piccole e medie imprese che sono intenzionate al passaggio verso l'economia circolare. Per raggiungere questo obiettivo gli autori hanno eseguito una revisione narrativa e sistematica della letteratura su diversi argomenti. Il primo passo è stato quello di acquisire conoscenze sull'economia circolare, e di combinarla con le peculiarità degli attori della filiera nel contesto del settore manifatturiero. Ciò che è emerso è che, dopo la rivoluzione industriale, i produttori hanno iniziato a diventare una minaccia per l'ambiente, poiché la loro unica preoccupazione era soddisfare la domanda globale trascurando le esternalità negative che procuravano su di essa. Si è capito che l'unico modo per affrontare il problema era passare a una produzione sostenibile. Per attuare il cambiamento non bastano le grandi aziende, soprattutto in Italia, dove rappresentano meno del 10% delle imprese complessive. Si è quindi deciso di puntare sulle piccole e medie imprese. Nonostante debbano affrontare molte sfide per diventare circolari, non ci sono ancora prove di un framework che possa supportarle nella transizione. Questo è ciò che ha portato gli autori a progettarne uno nuovo per facilitare il processo. In particolare, questo si basa su due strumenti fondamentali: un modello di maturità, convalidato su casi reali, e una tabella di marcia delle proposte. Per implementare le pratiche sostenibili sono necessarie tecnologie specifiche per raccogliere dati e una serie di indicatori necessari per monitorare le prestazioni. Il modello di maturità e le proposte combinate consentono alle aziende di creare consapevolezza di sé sul proprio livello di circolarità e quindi di intraprendere azioni concrete in base al ruolo nella filiera.
